HS Sports Update: Huskies cross-country wins season-opener

FOOTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville accepted forfeit victories last Friday, but Pinson Valley got onto the field. The Indians held off Shades Valley 31-21 to improve to 1-1 on the season.

This Friday, all three teams are back in action, as they begin region play. Hewitt-Trussville heads to Spain Park, Clay-Chalkville travels to Jasper and Pinson Valley hosts Gardendale.


VOLLEYBALL

The Clay-Chalkville volleyball team has gotten off to a solid start in 2020. Last week, the Cougars swept a tri-match with Appalachian (25-21, 25-11) and Cornerstone (25-3, 25-5) on Monday. On Tuesday, the Cougars fell to Oxford (25-14, 25-12) before beating St. Clair County in five sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-9, 25-17, 15-12) on Thursday.

This week, the Cougars host Woodlawn and Pinson Valley on Tuesday and play a tri-match at Gardendale with Minor on Thursday.


CROSS-COUNTRY

The Hewitt-Trussville cross-country teams began their season on Saturday at the Waffle House/Yellow Jacket Invitational in Oxford. The girls won the event and the boys placed third. Maci Mills paced the girls team with an eighth-place finish, followed by Amelia Brady (10th), Kylee Sisk (14th), Kinley Harris (20th) and Avery Cahoon (23rd). Nathan Knox placed fourth to lead the boys, followed by Mitchell Phillips (eighth), Sam Lovin (22nd), Alex Jones (32nd) and Jack Pate (37th).
