HS sports update: Huskies win Hoover Classic

BASEBALL

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team wrapped up the regular season on Monday with an 8-3 win over Locust Fork. The Cougars celebrated seniors Michael Kilgore, Connor Miles, Zach Reeves, Jeremy Ervin and Logan Catalano on the evening.

The Cougars’ season came to a close on Friday night, as they were swept by Hueytown, 11-7 and 11-4, in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team clinched a playoff spot with a Class 7A, Area 7 win over Gadsden City, 4-1, on Tuesday. Carson Skipper hurled a three-hitter, striking out 13 hitters in the process. He also notched an RBI triple. Ed Johnson and Jacob Bishop each had a double and RBI, and Caden Kirk doubled twice in the game.

The Huskies finished off the area sweep of Gadsden City with a 14-0 win on Thursday. Michael Fowler hurled a two-hit shutout and struck out seven. Skipper hit two doubles and drove in three runs. Johnson, Evan Kirk and Keith Lanum all knocked in a pair. Ty Mauldin drove in a run as well.

This week, the Huskies will travel to Hoover for the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. A doubleheader is set for Friday at 5 p.m., while a third game will be played Saturday if necessary.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team wrapped up the season with a 14-4 win over Shades Valley, but did not qualify for the postseason.

SOFTBALL

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team lost to Southside-Gadsden, 9-3, on Monday, as the Indians surrendered seven runs over the final two innings to give up the lead. Shauna Clevenger notched three hits and Maddie Pliscofsky registered two. Both drove in a run for the Indians.

The Indians picked up an area win on Tuesday with an offensive outburst in a 23-8 win over Clay-Chalkville. Hope Cole racked up three hits, including a homer and a double, and knocked in four runs. Ka’Mya Hampton went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs. Pliscofsky was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Pinson Valley played in the Hoover Classic over the weekend, and began play on Friday with a pair of pool games. The Indians fell, 8-1, to Vestavia Hills to start things. Clevenger drove in the team’s only run in the game. In the second game, Pinson fell to Hale County, 5-2, as Jordan Walker and Mollie Peoples knocked in runs.

The Indians picked up an impressive 1-0 win over Helena on Saturday. Savannah Mayes doubled and drove in the game’s only run, while Hampton allowed just one hit in five innings. Pinson was eliminated in a 6-1 loss to Beech (Tennessee).

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to area foe Pinson Valley, 23-8, on Tuesday. Rachel Smith picked up three hits, homered and drove in two runs for the Cougars. Riley Tyree doubled and knocked in three. On Thursday, the Cougars fell to Calera, 16-1.

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team grabbed another dominant area win with a 14-0 win over Grissom on Tuesday, as Molly Cobb and Kaitlyn Hughes combined for a one-hit shutout in the circle. Kaitlyn McDaniel homered and doubled, while Crystal Maze hit two doubles and drove in five runs.

The Huskies wrapped up a perfect area slate with an 11-6 win over Huntsville on Thursday. Hewitt-Trussville hit four home runs in the game, with Cobb (three RBIs), Kailey Walters (two RBIs), Hannah Borden and Maze all going deep.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Hoover Classic over the weekend and began play with a pair of pool game victories on Friday. In a 7-1 win over Northview, Abi Inman homered and drove in two runs. In the second game, a 6-5 win over Smiths Station, Cobb and Maze hit homers.

The Huskies ran the table on Saturday to win the tournament, ripping off six straight wins. They began the day with a 5-4 win over Gardendale, as Anyce Harvey homered twice and drove in three runs, while Borden went deep as well. In an 8-0 win over Jeff Davis, Borden homered again and Maze went deep. Hughes pitched five shutout innings.

Hewitt-Trussville then took down Hartselle, 7-2, as Walters and Tate Moseley each drove in two runs. Borden homered twice and brought home five runs in the ensuing 10-2 win over Faith Academy. Cobb had two RBIs as well. In the semifinals, the Huskies downed Vestavia Hills, 4-1, behind another great performance by Hughes in the circle. She allowed just one hit in four innings.

The Huskies beat Northview, 3-0, in the final to win the tournament. Maze went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and Cobb pitched five innings of two-hit ball to cap off the perfect day.

SOCCER

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Grissom on Monday. The girls fell again on Tuesday, 2-1 to Gadsden City. The boys team, however, picked up a 2-1 win over Gadsden City on Tuesday.

The boys team beat Northridge, 3-1, on Thursday. Brandon Kirkland scored two goals and Jalon Isley added another for the Huskies.

On Saturday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls fell to Vestavia Hills, 4-0.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley soccer teams played Hueytown on Tuesday, with the girls tying 2-2 and the boys winning 8-1.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville soccer teams faced Pell City on Tuesday, with the boys falling 3-1 and the girls losing 10-0. On Saturday, the Clay-Chalkville girls beat McAdory 5-0.

TENNIS

The Hewitt-Trussville girls tennis team qualified for the state tournament by winning the Class 7A, Section 4 tournament in Huntsville last Monday. The state tournament is set for this Monday and Tuesday in Mobile.
