HS Sports Update: Huskies baseball wins area

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team locked up its playoff spot last Tuesday evening with a 5-3 win over Mountain Brook, eliminating the Spartans from playoff contention. Michael Fowler went the distance on the mound, striking out 11 batters in the process. Zach Defnall homered for the Huskies, while Kerrigan Edmonson and Tyler Mauldin each drove in runs as well. Ford Kelly knocked in two runs for Mountain Brook.

Hewitt-Trussville wrapped up the area slate with an 8-1 win over Mountain Brook on Wednesday evening. The Huskies scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings and controlled the game from there. Jared Waites went 6 2/3 innings for the Huskies, allowing just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Keith Lanum and Tyler Mauldin each drove home two runs for Hewitt-Trussville, while Defnall registered a pair of extra-base hits. Mountain Brook got its run on a Will Baynes home run.

This week, the Huskies are set to begin the first round of the Class 7A playoffs at home against Oak Mountain on Friday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team celebrated its seniors on Tuesday night with an 11-2 win over Ashville. The Cougars bats were hot from the start, as they scored seven runs over the first two innings and cruised to victory. Khalil Bell, Joseph Baker, Logan Pruett and Luke Moore all drove in two runs in the game. Tristan Walton and Zach Nichols combined to strike out 10 batters on the mound.

Clay-Chalkville finished the season with a record of 11-15-1. Seniors on the team included Ashton Kincaid, Pruett, Andrelle Tillman, Jonah Freind, Khalil Bell, Moore, Noah Tatum, Nichols, Mathew Blahous and Walton.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team began play last week on Monday, knocking off Shades Valley 10-5. The Indians overcame a 5-2 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning and cruised from there. Joe Smith drove in a couple of runs for Pinson Valley, while Barry White, William Tarpley and Braeden Gilkey combined to allow just one run over the final four innings.

Pinson Valley began its Class 6A first-round playoff series on Friday at Gardendale, with the Indians faltering in a 15-7 loss to the Rockets. The Indians got off to a great start, putting up three runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to open up a 7-2 lead. But the wheels came off in the fifth, as Gardendale scored 10 runs and overtook the Indians. For Pinson, Smith went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and TJ Chastain knocked in a pair of runs.

Pinson Valley fought back in the second game of the series on Saturday, but ultimately fell short 5-4 and saw its season come to a close. The Indians rallied after falling behind 5-1 in the fifth inning with three runs over the next two innings. Pinson Valley concluded the season with a record of 16-16.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team earned an area win last Monday, as the Huskies defeated Vestavia Hills 9-1. Anyce Harvey drove in three runs for the Huskies and Molly Cobb went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Cobb also started in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 in five innings of work.

The Huskies split a doubleheader with Pisgah on Tuesday, losing the first game 10-0 before rebounding to win the second game 5-4. Molly Cobb was the star offensively in the second game, as her solo homer in the top of the seventh gave Hewitt-Trussville the lead for good. It was her second home run of the game, as she finished with two homers and four RBIs. KK Hughes pitched the complete seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits.

Hewitt-Trussville and Mountain Brook wrapped up area play on Wednesday, with Hewitt claiming a 16-0 victory. Harvey had two hits and three RBIs for the Huskies, while Gracie Reeves knocked in a pair of runs. Hayden Neugent was nearly perfect, as she threw a no-hitter, walking just one and striking out six in three innings.

The Huskies made quick work of Helena on Thursday afternoon, winning 10-0 in a three-inning game. Cobb hit a home run, drove in two runs and pitched a perfect three innings in the circle. Hannah Borden went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

This week, the Huskies wrap up the regular season. They host Mortimer Jordan on Monday and Prattville on Tuesday before playing in the Hoover Classic over the weekend.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to area opponent Pell City 15-2 last Monday afternoon. Caliin Adaway and Rachel Smith drove in the runs for the Cougars.

Clay-Chalkville knocked off Mountain Brook 15-5 on Thursday afternoon, as the Cougars celebrated senior Mallory Morgan. Morgan had a couple hits to highlight her final home contest, including a home run and two RBIs. Smith had a huge game for the Cougars, as she went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and eight RBIs on the day, along with scoring four runs. Morgan also pitched for the Cougars, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits.

This week, the Cougars wrap up the regular season. They host Gardendale on Monday, travel to Mountain Brook on Tuesday and play in the Hoover Classic over the weekend.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team fell to Moody 10-0 last Monday and lost 9-0 to Springville on Tuesday.

This week, the Indians wrap up the regular season with a busy week. They travel to Locust Fork on Monday, host Shades Valley on Tuesday, host Pelham on Thursday and play in the Hoover Classic over the weekend.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team (8-6-3) fell to Habersham Central (Ga.) 2-1 on Monday. This week, the Huskies will play games against Class 7A, Area 6 opponents Spain Park and Mountain Brook that will determine their playoff fate.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls (6-6-2) beat Habersham Central (Ga.) 3-1 on Monday but fell to Spain Park 5-0 on Tuesday.
