HS sports update: Huskies softball team puts forth strong week

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Class 7A, Area 7 foe Huntsville on Tuesday, as the Huskies fell, 3-2, in 12 innings. The Huskies then fell to 2-2 in area play with a 4-2 loss to Huntsville on Thursday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team was outlasted by Class 6A, Area 12 opponent Gardendale, 15-13, on Tuesday. The Cougars rebounded on Thursday to grab a 4-2 win over Gardendale, but the Rockets won 7-1 in the nightcap to clinch the area crown.

In the first game on Thursday, Logan Catalano knocked in a couple runs for the Cougars and Khalil Bell put forth a three-hit effort with an RBI. Michael Kilgore was sensational on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs with six strikeouts in the complete game effort.

SOFTBALL

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team began the week with a solid 6-2 win over Hayden. Hope Cole led the way offensively, as she went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Maddie Pliscofsky and Ka’Mya Hampton each registered two hits and drove in a run. Hampton went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings.

The Indians got two Class 6A, Area 12 victories on Wednesday, defeating Center Point 15-0 and 16-0. In the first game, Shauna Clevenger tripled and drove in three runs, while Charlotte Phillips knocked in two. In the second game, Graci Graves and Phillips each drove in three runs, while Clevenger and Pliscofsky knocked in a pair apiece. Kyla Smith pitched both games, combining for six innings and just one hit.

Pinson Valley was unable to make an early lead stand up on Thursday in a 4-2 loss to Corner. Clevenger posted three hits, including two doubles, in the game.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team couldn’t keep up with Calera on Monday, as the Cougars fell 15-4. Rachel Smith had two RBIs in the game. On Tuesday, the Cougars picked up an area win over Center Point, 23-0. Jewel Mealing hit two doubles and drove in five runs and Alexis Griffin knocked in four. Rachel Smith allowed just one hit in three innings.

On Thursday, the Cougars fell to Pelham, 8-1. They led 1-0 after three innings, but were unable to hold Pelham down over the final three frames.

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team dominated Huntsville, 9-0, on Monday to pick up a Class 7A, Area 7 win. Hannah Borden picked up a pair of hits and three RBIs. Anyce Harvey drove in two runs with two doubles and Kailey Walters notched three hits, including a double. Molly Cobb allowed six hits in a seven-inning shutout effort.

The Huskies dominated area foe Grissom, 19-3, by scoring 15 runs over the final two innings. Tate Moseley homered twice in the contest and drove in four runs. Abigail Dorsett was 3-for-4 with a triple, homer and three runs scored. Walters and Crystal Maze each registered two hits and also homered. Abi Inman racked up four hits — including a double — three RBIs and three runs.

Hewitt-Trussville dominated Helena, 11-0, on Thursday. Kaitlyn Hughes allowed just three hits in her five innings in the circle. Borden went 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Anyce Harvey also had a three-hit night and drove in a run.

Hewitt-Trussville competed in the Sumiton Christian Tournament on Friday, and picked up two wins in three games. In the first game, the Huskies notched a 4-2 win over Cordova. Borden knocked in two runs and Hayden Neugent allowed seven hits and two runs in five innings. The Huskies then took care of Minor, 15-0. Maze homered and drove in four runs, while Cobb and Kaitlyn McDaniel each homered and drove in a pair of runs. Hughes gave up a lone hit and struck out nine in five innings.

The Huskies wrapped up the evening with a 6-1 loss to the top-ranked team in Class 6A, Gardendale. Inman’s home run in the fifth was the only offensive provided by Hewitt-Trussville.

SOCCER

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville soccer teams split against Springville on Monday. The boys won 3-2 while the girls lost 11-3.

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie with Hoover on Tuesday. Lizzy Hurst scored the lone goal, with Bri Davis assisting.

The Huskies split with Huntsville on Thursday night. The girls won a thrilling match, with the Huskies winning 4-2 in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and overtime period. The boys fell 4-1.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley girls soccer team lost to John Carroll, 10-0, on Thursday.
