HS Sports Update: Huskies baseball has perfect week

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team opened a Class 7A, Area 6 series with a 7-0 win over Spain Park on Tuesday evening. The Huskies scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to victory. Creed Parker and Tyler Mauldin each knocked in two runs, while Michael Fowler threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 10.

Hewitt-Trussville completed the sweep on Thursday with a 10-7 win over Spain Park. The Jags jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, but the Huskies rallied with four runs in the fifth and took the lead for good with five runs in the seventh. Hudson Boren drove in three runs on the night, while Parker and Zach Defnall each drove in a pair. Ethan Smallwood had two RBIs for the Jags.

The Huskies capped off a perfect week with a 9-5 win over Gadsden City on Friday. Owen Boren picked up the win on the mound, Keith Lanum, Jacob Bishop and Julian Sauger all registered two hits.

Clay-Chalkville

The Pinson Valley baseball team swept a Class 6A, Area 12 series from Clay-Chalkville on Thursday. The Indians rallied to win the first game 16-14 before winning 8-0 in the second contest.

In the first game, Pinson Valley took a 4-0 lead in the third inning but saw the Cougars put together three huge innings to take a 14-5 lead. But the Indians responded in their final at-bat, scoring 11 runs and edging out the Cougars. Blaine Crawley went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Jesse Cardona was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Indians. For Clay, Noah Lessley homered and knocked in three, while Evan Kincaid doubled and had four RBIs. Noah Tatum knocked in three as well.

In the second game, Cardona drove in two runs and Joe Smith went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run and striking out six in the Indians win.

Clay-Chalkville got back on track Friday with a 10-7 win over Corner. Demarcus Burris led the Cougars offense with two hits, including a triple and three RBIs. Luke Moore notched a pair of hits and RBIs as well. Logan Pruett went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team swept a Class 6A, Area 12 series from Clay-Chalkville on Thursday. The Indians rallied to win the first game 16-14 before winning 8-0 in the second contest.

In the first game, Pinson Valley took a 4-0 lead in the third inning but saw the Cougars put together three huge innings to take a 14-5 lead. But the Indians responded in their final at-bat, scoring 11 runs and edging out the Cougars. Blaine Crawley went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Jesse Cardona was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Indians. Pinson Valley earned another win on Friday, as the Indians beat Pleasant Grove 12-2. Crawley and Drew Rickles led the Indians offense with two RBIs each. Evan Moore allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in four innings.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Spain Park softball team knocked off Hewitt-Trussville 4-2 on Wednesday in an area game on the strength of Maddie Majors’ two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. Lindsay Parker’s single in the second gave the Jags the early lead, but Hewitt scored twice in the sixth to claim the lead, before Spain Park scored on an error to knot the game at 2-2 in the sixth. KK Hughes pitched well for Hewitt, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits. Spain Park’s Annabelle Widra struck out nine and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits.

Hewitt-Trussville rebounded to pick up a 2-0 win over Springville on Thursday. The Huskies scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Crystal Maze was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Riley Tyree drew a bases-loaded walk two batters later. Molly Cobb was stellar in the circle, as she allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in the complete game shutout.

Clay-Chalkville

The Pinson Valley softball team earned a 16-1 win over area foe Clay-Chalkville on Wednesday afternoon. For the Indians, Shauna Clevenger led the way offensively, as she went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs on the game. Anna Sullivan had three hits and drove in four, while Savannah Mayes had a couple RBIs as well. Hope Cole allowed just two hits and an unearned run in five innings in the circle, while also registering three hits at the plate. Mallory Morgan’s RBI double plated Clay’s lone run.

The Cougars fell to Pelham 20-5 on Thursday. Mikaela Talton homered and had three RBIs to lead Clay.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team earned a 16-1 win over area foe Clay-Chalkville on Wednesday afternoon. Over the weekend, Pinson Valley played three games in the Brookwood tournament. In the first game, the Indians shut out Lamar County 8-0. Ka’Mya Hampton led the Indians offense, as she went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Clevenger had a triple and two RBs as well. Jordan Walker pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and struck out eight. In Pinson’s second game of the night, Holy Spirit beat Pinson 2-1. On Saturday, Gordo defeated the Indians 5-0.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team (8-5-3) blanked Ramsay 10-0 on Tuesday. Eric Besse recorded a hat trick, while Preston Peterson and Seth Hall each scored two goals in the win. On Thursday, the Huskies defeated Class 7A, Area 6 opponent Spain Park 2-1, as Besse and Joseph Head both found the back of the net. Hewitt-Trussville ended the week with a 2-0 loss to area opponent Vestavia Hills on Saturday.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team (5-5-2) blanked Ramsay 11-0 on Tuesday. Kelly Dunn notched a hat trick, while Lizzy Hurst and Elizabeth Mezrano each scored two goals in the win. On Friday, the Lady Huskies fell to area opponent Mountain Brook 3-2.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field teams competed over the weekend at the Mountain Brook Invitational. Stone Shelnutt emerged as the Huskies’ top performer, as he won the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 3/4 inches. He also broke the school and meet record in the 400 meters by posting a time of 48.01 seconds in the preliminary round.
