HS sports update: Huskies pick up big area wins

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team started off Class 7A, Area 7 play with a critical 5-4 win over Grissom on Tuesday. Austin Bittle drove in the game-winning run in the seventh on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, as the Huskies scored the tying run earlier in the inning on a Michael Fowler sacrifice fly. Carson Skipper went the distance on the mound, striking out six, and registered three hits. Ed Johnson, Tyler Mauldin and Fowler all picked up two hits in the game.

The Huskies completed the sweep on Thursday with a 5-0 win over Grissom. Fowler went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits and punching out eight batters. Zach Defnall, Skipper and Caden Kirk each registered two hits. Johnson and Mauldin each had RBIs on the evening.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team dropped a Class 6A, Area 12 game against Pinson Valley, 7-3, on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the Cougars rebounded to win the series, as they swept the doubleheader, 6-3 and 7-6.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team grabbed a key win over Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday, grabbing a 7-3 win in a Class 6A, Area 12 contest. The Cougars got their revenge on Thursday, sweeping the Indians 6-3 and 7-6 in a doubleheader.

SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began the week with a Class 7A, Area 7 win over Gadsden City, as the Huskies won 9-0. Abi Inman led the way offensively with a 2-for-3 night, with a home run, double and three RBIs. Anyce Harvey and Tate Moseley racked up three hits apiece, while Molly Cobb and Hayden Neugent combined in the circle for a two-hit shutout.

The Huskies dominated Gadsden City again on Thursday, winning 11-0. Inman led the way with the bats once again, as she belted two homers, one of which was a grand slam, and drove home five runs in the game. Hannah Borden and Cobb each homered as well. Neugent allowed just two hits and struck out six in four innings on the mound.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team fell to Hayden, 7-1, on Tuesday. The Indians scored in the first to take an early lead, but that was all they could muster on the evening. Shauna Clevenger reached base all three times in the game.

The Indians fell to Gardendale, 16-1, on Thursday.

Over the weekend, Pinson Valley played in the Rumble on the River in Pell City. The Indians began play on Friday and split a pair of games. They picked up a 2-1 win over Briarwood, as Ka’Mya Hampton surrendered the lone run over six strong innings of work in the circle. In the other contest, the Indians fell to North Jackson, 1-0.

On Saturday, the Indians split once again. They began the day with an 8-3 win over Walter Wellborn. Ande Findley led the way, as she went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Jordan Walker and Maddie Pliscofsky each registered two hits. Hope Cole pitched well but the Pinson Valley offense was unable to get much going in a 2-0 loss to North Jackson.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to Shelby County, 14-0, on Tuesday. Julia Petty had two of the Cougars’ four hits, including a double. On Wednesday, Petty hurled a no-hitter as the Cougars dominated Mountain Brook, 10-0. Petty struck out 12 batters over five innings of work. Rachel Smith led the way offensively, as she went 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Jewel Mealing homered and knocked in two runs.

SOCCER

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley boys soccer team fell to Oneonta, 3-0, on Tuesday. The boys fell to Clay-Chalkville, 3-0, on Thursday, while the girls beat the Cougars, 6-2.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville boys soccer team picked up a 3-0 win against area foe Pinson Valley on Thursday. The girls lost to the Indians, 6-2.

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team traveled to Foley to play in the Southern Coast Cup over the weekend. The Huskies opened play on Friday with a pair of games, winning both. They notched a 5-3 win over Discovery (Georgia) and a 3-0 shutout win over St. Paul’s. They finished a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 3-0 win over Daphne on Saturday.

The boys team was also in Foley for the Southern Coast Cup and split its two games on Friday. Brandon Kirkland and Eric Besse scored for the Huskies in a 4-2 loss to St. George’s Independent (Tennessee) and Cayman Pearson notched the lone goal of the game in Hewitt’s 1-0 win over Daphne. The Huskies dropped a 4-1 decision to Grace (Tennessee) on Saturday.
