HS Sports Update: Huskies pick up 4 wins

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Vestavia Hills and Hewitt-Trussville baseball teams opened Class 7A, Area 6 play last Tuesday, with the Huskies taking the first game of the series 3-0. Michael Fowler allowed just one hit and struck out 13 batters in the complete game effort. Vestavia’s Colton Lewis was nearly as sharp, as he allowed just three hits and three runs (one earned) and struck out 10 in six innings.

Vestavia Hills returned the favor on Friday, beating Hewitt-Trussville 11-0 to split the area series. Lewis doubled and tripled and finished the game with five RBIs. Mason Maners had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Garrison Cherry allowed just one hit and struck out eight in five innings.

On Saturday, Briarwood jumped on Hewitt-Trussville with six first-inning runs and rode that to an 8-5 victory. Blake McKenna and Sam Hamner drove in a pair of runs each for Briarwood, while Jacob Bishop knocked in a pair for Hewitt.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team began play last week with an 8-6 win over Moody on Monday. On Tuesday, the Cougars fell to Albertville 10-0. The Cougars played Albertville again on Thursday and fell 3-2.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team opened an area series with Pell City on Tuesday night, dropping the first game 4-2 after Pell City notched all of its runs in a decisive fifth inning. Pell City finished the sweep with two more wins over Pinson on Thursday, with wins of 7-3 and 14-5.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began last week on Monday with a doubleheader sweep over Pisgah. In the first game, the Huskies rolled to a 12-0 win. Molly Cobb led the way, as she hit a home run, doubled twice, and pitched six innings of one-hit ball in the circle. Crystal Maze homered and drove in three runs as well. The Huskies won 5-1 in the second game, as Kailey Walters homered and KK Hughes pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and one run.

The Huskies rallied to pick up an 11-7 win over Helena on Tuesday evening. Helena jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but the Huskies scored 10 of their 11 runs over the final two frames and hung on despite a late Helena rally in the seventh. Anyce Harvey and Maze each drove in three runs for Hewitt, while Walters registered a two-run double. Cobb tallied two hits and an RBI and recorded the game’s final out to earn the save.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Bob Jones tournament over the weekend, beginning things on Friday with two games. In the first game, the Huskies dominated Madisonville North Hopkins (Kentucky) 16-0. Cobb led the way, as she went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs She also threw five hitless innings. Riley Tyree was also 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Maddie Katona drove in three and Anyce Harvey homered as well. In the second game, Walters drove in a pair but the Huskies fell to Sparkman 5-4.

The Huskies’ run ended in the first game Saturday in a 4-3 loss to James Clemens, as the Jets scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to area foe Pell City 15-0 last Tuesday, as the Cougars failed to register a hit in the game.

Pinson Valley

In the first game played in its new stadium, the Pinson Valley softball team fell to Leeds 9-5 last Tuesday. Hope Cole registered three hits — including a home run and a double — scored two runs and drove in another to lead the Indians.

Mortimer Jordan knocked off Pinson Valley 18-11 in a high-scoring affair on Thursday. Graci Graves homered and drove in three runs to lead the Indians offense. Mollie Peoples notched another homer, while Cole and Anna Sullivan had two RBIs each.

SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team went 4-0 last week to improve to 6-4-3 on the season. The Huskies shut out Gadsden City 5-0 on Tuesday thanks to a hat trick from Myles Cornett and two goals from Eric Besse. Over the weekend, Hewitt-Trussville competed at the Southern Coast Cup in Foley. The team beat LaFayette (Ga.) 7-0, Daphne 2-1 and Arlington (Tenn.) 4-0.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team blanked Gadsden City 3-0 on Tuesday, moving to 3-4-2 overall.
