HS Sports Update: Huskies baseball wins Gulf Coast Classic

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team traveled to the beach for spring break to compete in Gulf Coast Classic II. The Huskies began play last Monday with a 14-6 win over Russellville. Owen Boren went five innings on the mound to earn the win, striking out six in the process. Riley Quick hurled the final two innings, striking out three and getting the save. Tyler Mauldin hit a three-run home run to lift the offense, while Jacob Bishop and Hudson Boren each laced run-scoring doubles. Creed Parker tallied a pair of hits and scored three runs.

The Huskies continued play with two more wins on Tuesday. They beat Phil Campbell 9-1 behind a strong performance on the mound from Michael Fowler. He went 6 1/3 innings, striking out 14 batters in the process. Mauldin had a double among his two hits and tallied three RBIs, while Kerrigan Edmonson also doubled and drove home two. Bishop, Jackson Holland and Hudson Boren each notched two hits.

Hewitt-Trussville followed that up with a 6-1 victory over Stagg (Illinois). Skylar Jones allowed just one hit and fanned nine in six innings on the mound. Edmonson tripled, Julian Sauger hit a homer and Keith Lanum drove in two runs.

On Wednesday, the Huskies finished up pool play with a 20-3 win over Baldwin County. Mauldin got the win on the mound to go along with four hits, a homer, a triple and four RBIs. Holland and Lanum also homered in the game, while Edmonson and Landon Berguson each ripped two doubles.

Hewitt-Trussville capped off the week with two more wins on Thursday and won the tournament. In the semifinals, the Huskies defeated Tinley Park (Illinois) 3-1. Matt Miller threw a complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Mauldin, Sauger and Zach Defnall drove in the runs. The Huskies defeated Southside-Gadsden 7-2 in the final. Parker hurled the complete game, while Mauldin and Defnall each had run-scoring extra base hits to help the Huskies finish off a 6-0 week.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team also played in Gulf Coast Classic II last week and fell in a pair of games on Monday. The Cougars dropped their first game to Smiths Station, 21-4. Khalil Bell was the bright spot for the Cougars in the contest, as he went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. In the second game, the Cougars couldn’t hold on to their early lead and fell 7-3 to GW Long. Ashton Kincaid homered and knocked in two runs, while leadoff hitter Andrelle Tillman went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.

Clay-Chalkville fell to Fairhope 9-2 on Tuesday and lost to Gallatin (Tennessee) 4-3 on Wednesday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team stayed home over spring break and split a doubleheader with Oak Grove and Corner on Monday. In the first game, the Indians ran away with a 16-1 victory over Oak Grove. William Tarpley led the offense with four runs batted, while Blaine Crawley was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Hagen Gingras was strong on the mound, going four innings and allowing a run on three hits. In the second game, the Indians were unable to come back and fell 10-7 to Corner. Jesse Cardona doubled and drove in two runs in the game.

The Indians notched two victories on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader from Oakman. In a 10-0 win, Joe Smith drove in a pair of runs and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings on the mound to earn the win. Pinson Valley scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a tie game and win 3-1 in the second game. Drew Rickles knocked in two of the three runs in the contest. Barry White earned the win on the mound, as he hurled four scoreless innings.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team played in Gulf Coast Classic III over spring break. The Huskies began their run in the event at the beach with a pair of games on Monday. In the first game, the Huskies fell to Siegel (Tennessee) 5-3. Hewitt-Trussville’s bats got back on track in the second game in an 8-1 win over Wicksburg. Molly Cobb shut down Wicksburg, as she surrendered just an unearned run on five hits in her five innings of work.

The Huskies were dominant in their two games on Tuesday, knocking off Dothan 10-0 and defeating Dale County 14-0. Against Dothan, Kailey Walters homered and drove in two runs, while Cobb and Hannah Borden each had two RBIs as well. KK Hughes pitched five scoreless frames, allowing four hits and striking out five. In the Dale County contest, Kenleigh Cahalan led off and went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Walters drove in three more runs, while Borden and Katelyn Murphy tallied two RBIs. Hayden Neugent surrendered just one hit and struck out six in four innings of work.

Hewitt-Trussville advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament on Wednesday. The Huskies began bracket play with a 17-0 victory over Lawrence County. Borden hit two homers and drove in three runs, while Walters also went deep. Cahalan sparked the offense with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Hughes allowed just one hit over three innings. In the next game, Anyce Harvey’s sacrifice fly was the only run in the Huskies’ 1-0 win over Siegel (Tennessee). Cobb allowed just one hit and struck out nine in five innings in the circle. Walters’ homer accounted for the only run in a 2-1 loss to Holtville.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team played in the Stampede Classic in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, as the Cougars put together a strong showing and advanced to the finals of the tournament. They notched wins over Holtville (21-2), Paul Bryant (15-3), Greensboro (11-2) and Falkville (2-0) before falling to Shelby County 15-5 in the final.
