HS Sports Update: Huskies softball notches pair of wins

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team began last week with an 11-1 win over Southside-Gadsden on Monday. Creed Parker earned the win on the mound and Riley Quick hurled the final three innings to get the save. Jacob Bishop hit a two-run home run, Tyler Mauldin racked up three hits, Julian Sauger hit two doubles and Keith Lanum drove in a pair of runs for the Huskies.

Hewitt-Trussville held off Southside-Gadsden on Wednesday, notching an 8-7 win. Owen Boren picked up the win in relief, while Jared Waites notched the save. Kerrigan Edmonson had three hits, including a triple and four RBIs. Hudson Boren drove in a pair, Lanum had three hits, Parker picked up two hits and Zach Defnall registered a triple in the game.

The Huskies picked up their third win of the week by beating Sparkman 9-0 on Thursday. Michael Fowler went 6 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit with 13 strikeouts. Defnall picked up a double among his two hits and drove in three runs to lead the offense. Edmonson and Sauger each doubled as well.

Hewitt-Trussville notched a 7-2 win over Pelham on Friday night. Mauldin earned the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing one earned run while striking out four. Owen Boren hurled the final two innings in perfect fashion to get the save. Jackson Holland drove in a pair of runs and Lanum ripped two hits.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team faced area foe Pell City last week and was swept in three games. Pell City took a 13-0 victory on Tuesday and won 3-1 and 11-1 in a Thursday doubleheader.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team was back in action last Friday and picked up a pair of one-run wins in a doubleheader sweep of Jasper. In the first game, the Indians won 6-5 in eight innings, as they tied the game with a run in the seventh and won it in walk-off fashion when Barry White scored on a dropped third strike. Jesse Cardona’s hit tied the game in the seventh and he finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Blaine Crawley earned the win, as he allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings to finish the contest.

Pinson Valley rallied again in the second game, rallying for three runs in the final inning to walk off with an 11-10 win. TJ Chastain scored on a hit by pitch to cut the deficit to a run, and the Indians won when Crawley and Chris Calma both scored on a wild pitch followed by an error. Crawley also had two hits and two RBIs in the game. Cardona got the win, as he held Jasper scoreless over the final two frames.

The Indians split a doubleheader at Rickwood Field on Saturday, beginning with an 8-4 win over Ramsay. Chastain led the offense in the first game with a pair of hits and RBIs. He also got the win on the mound, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) in six innings, while striking out eight. In the second game, Winfield scored early and often and took a 9-3 victory.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began last week with a 7-3 win over Prattville on Monday. Prattville got on the board initially with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Huskies tied the game in the fourth and took the lead for good in the fifth on Anyce Harvey’s three-run home run. Hannah Borden also homered for the Huskies. Molly Cobb went the distance in the circle, striking out nine batters in seven innings.

Hewitt-Trussville notched a 5-3 area win over Vestavia Hills on Thursday. The Huskies went ahead in the fourth inning on Riley Tyree’s run-scoring groundout and Harvey’s home run in the following inning gave the Huskies a two-run cushion. Maddie Katona and Cobb notched RBI hits in the sixth to make it 5-2. Vestavia Hills rallied and had the bases loaded in the seventh inning, before Kaitlyn Hughes finished off the complete game in the circle. Hannah Grace Roden drove in two runs for Vestavia Hills.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to area foe Pinson Valley 10-0 on Tuesday. The Cougars were only able to tally two hits against Indians pitcher Hope Cole.

The Cougars rebounded on Thursday, picking up an 8-4 win over Ramsay. The Cougars plated four in the first inning and tacked on insurance runs over the fourth and fifth innings. They pounded out 13 hits, with six players recording multi-hit games. Mallory Morgan went the distance in the circle, as she allowed two earned runs and struck out six.

Clay-Chalkville fell to Pelham 8-1 on Friday, as the Panthers scored the final seven runs of the game over the course of the fourth through sixth innings.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team began last week on Monday with an 11-3 loss to a strong Corner team. The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Shauna Clevenger drove in a run with a hit, Ka’Mya Hampton was hit by pitch with the bases loaded and Graci Graves hit a sacrifice fly. But Corner got all three runs back in the bottom half of the inning, grabbed a lead in the fourth and won the game with seven runs in the sixth.

Pinson Valley rebounded on Tuesday to pick up a 10-0 area win over Clay-Chalkville. Jordan Walker led the offensive charge with three hits, a home run and four RBIs. Clevenger knocked in a pair and had two hits. Hope Cole went the distance in the circle, allowing just one hits and striking out eight in five innings. She also had three hits at the plate.

The Indians kept the momentum going on Thursday with a convincing 20-4 victory over Pelham. Pinson Valley leapt to a 7-0 lead after two innings and put the game away with 10 runs in the sixth. Five Pinson Valley players hit homers in the game, as Keara Gibbs, Graves, Hampton (grand slam), Mollie Peoples and Walker all went yard. Hampton combined with Walker for a solid pitching performance as well.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team shut out Woodlawn 12-0 on Tuesday and drew Stanhope Elmore 1-1 on Wednesday. The Huskies, now 2-4-3 on the season, will be off this week for spring break.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team tied Richmond Hills (Ga.) 1-1 and beat Hilton Head (S.C.) 2-1 to improve to 2-4-2 overall. Kelly Dunn and Averi Hathcock scored goals in the win. 


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field teams competed on Thursday at the Auburn Elite Meet. Stone Shelnutt (300-meter hurdles, long jump) and Kelsey Martin (200 meters) won events for the Huskies.
