HS Sports Update: Cougars baseball wins a pair

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team picked up a 6-4 win over Calera last Tuesday. Creed Parker earned the win for the Huskies, as he hurled the final three innings in scoreless fashion. Jacob Bishop doubled and had three RBIs, while Jackson Holland notched two hits and two RBIs. Keith Lanum scored a pair of runs as well.

The Huskies grabbed their second win over Calera in as many days on Wednesday, with a 9-1 victory. Tyler Mauldin earned the win on the mound and added two hits at the plate. Julian Sauger finished a home run shy of the cycle and drove in two runs. Bishop had two triples and three RBIs; Holland had a double among his two hits and Kerrigan Edmonson doubled as well.

On Friday, the Huskies dropped a pair of 1-0 ball games to Smiths Station and Central-Phenix City. But on Saturday, they defeated Saraland 6-5 in eight innings before falling to Auburn 5-2. In the win over Saraland, Owen Boren went five innings on the mound to earn the win. Hudson Boren had the walk-off two-run double to win it, while Mauldin had two doubles and tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. Edmonson had a two-run double, and Lanum racked up two hits.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team picked up a 7-1 win over John Carroll last Tuesday. The Cougars scored four runs in the second inning to take the early lead and rode that to the win. Ashton Kincaid knocked in three runs for the Cougars, and Zach Nichols had two RBIs. Nichols also got the start on the mound, allowing six hits over five scoreless innings.

Clay-Chalkville wrapped up the week with a 9-8 win over Shades Valley on Friday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team picked up a 10-2 win over Moody last Tuesday. The Indians’ eight-run fifth inning proved to be the difference. Drew Rickles led the offense by driving in two runs. Braeden Gilkey was solid on the mound, as he allowed just four hits and a run in six innings of work.

The Indians fell to Gardendale 14-7 on Wednesday. Justin Deblieck drove in a pair of runs in the game for Pinson Valley.

The Indians split a doubleheader with Springville and Mortimer Jordan on Saturday. Springville got the better of the Indians in a 10-4 victory, but Pinson Valley got a win in a wild 21-11 victory over Mortimer Jordan. The game was tight until the Indians pushed across nine runs in the sixth inning to activate the run rule and end the game. William Tarpley drove in four runs, while Jesse Cardona drove in three and scored five times.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

Spain Park’s bats were on fire in an 18-2 win over area opponent Hewitt-Trussville on Wednesday evening. The Jags put up nine runs in the third inning and never looked back, as they hit five home runs on the evening. Caroline Wooley hit two homers, while Lydia Coleman, Annabelle Widra and Maddie Majors each went deep as well. Hannah Borden hit a two-run shot for the Huskies in the third inning. Widra also went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine in five innings.

Hewitt-Trussville competed in the Oxford Spring Sting tournament over the weekend, advancing to the semifinals on Saturday. The Huskies began pool play on Friday with a pair of wins. Molly Cobb had a double, home run and two RBIs in a 6-1 win over Oxford, while also striking out 11 batters and allowing one run on one hit in five innings of pitching. The Huskies then dominated Susan Moore 13-2. Anyce Harvey homered, and four players drove in two runs each.

Hewitt-Trussville continued its strong play on Saturday morning with a 4-0 win over Brookwood, as the Huskies scored all their runs in the first inning. KK Hughes did not allow a hit in four innings in the circle. Hayden Neugent threw the shutout in an 11-0 win over Munford. Cobb led the way offensively with three RBIs. Hannah Dorsett had two hits and two RBIs in the following 9-1 win over Central-Clay.

In the quarterfinals, the Huskies got past Lincoln 5-1, as Kenleigh Cahalan drove home two runs and Hughes pitched six innings of one-run ball. Spain Park ended their run in the semifinals, as the Jags picked up a 3-2 win.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team began last week with an 11-1 loss to Springville on Monday afternoon. The Indians took the lead in the fourth inning with a bases-loaded walk from Hope Cole, but Springville broke through to take the lead in the fifth and held on.

Pinson Valley fell to Pell City 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Indians tied the game with a run in the fifth, but Pell City’s go-ahead run in the sixth made the difference. Cole and Ka’Mya Hampton each notched two hits for the Indians. Hampton got the start and pitched well, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.

Over the weekend, Pinson Valley played in Oneonta’s tournament and put together a nice run. The Indians began things on Friday with a 5-4 loss to Brewer, as Brewer scored the winning run to end the contest. For Pinson, Mollie Peoples homered, while she and Shauna Clevenger each drove in two runs. Grace Graves homered and drove in three in the Indians’ ensuing 5-4 win over Oneonta.

Pinson Valley began Saturday with a 4-0 win over Fultondale, as Cole allowed just two hits and struck out seven in four innings of work. Jordan Walker hurled the shutout in the following 6-0 win over Locust Fork, as she allowed two hits and struck out five in four innings. The Indians then avenged an earlier loss by picking up a 3-1 victory over Brewer. Hampton homered and had two RBIs in the contest to lead the way, while also throwing three innings. Pinson’s run came to an end with a 12-1 loss to Pelham.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team won its first game of the season in dramatic fashion on Monday, as the Huskies beat Class 7A, Area 6 opponent Mountain Brook 2-1 in penalty kicks. Eric Besse scored Hewitt’s lone goal in regulation.

Hewitt-Trussville traveled to Tennessee over the weekend to compete in the Smoky Mountain Cup. It fell to Greenville (Tenn.) 3-1 on Thursday and McGill-Toolen 4-2 on Friday before earning a 1-1 draw with Dickson County on Saturday. This week, the Huskies will host Woodlawn on Tuesday and play at Stanhope-Elmore on Wednesday.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team fell to Spain Park 3-0 on Wednesday. It will travel to play against Richmond Hill (Ga.) on Friday and Hilton Head (S.C.) on Saturday. 


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field teams competed on Saturday at the Homewood Invitational.

Stone Shelnutt and Lea Townsend emerged as the team’s top performers. Shelnutt won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.94 seconds and the 100-meter dash in 11 seconds. Townsend won the girls shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 9 inches.
