HS Sports Update: Huskies softball wins 3

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

In a rematch from last spring’s playoffs, the Hoover baseball team topped Hewitt-Trussville 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The Bucs scored three runs over the first two innings and never trailed. Peyton Wilson had a big day at the plate for the Bucs, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in. Jackson Holland’s two-run double in the sixth accounted for the Huskies’ runs.

Hewitt-Trussville dispatched John Carroll 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon, as Skylar Jones threw a one-hit shutout over six innings and struck out 11. Tyler Mauldin, Julian Sauger and Hudson Boren all notched two RBIs in the contest. Jacob Bishop and Holland notched doubles and Creed Parker had two hits. Luke Lalisan gave the Cavs two strong innings of relief, hurling the final two innings and allowing one hit and an unearned run.

The Huskies picked up a 7-6 win over Briarwood on Friday night, as Holland’s walk-off hit scored Bishop in the ninth inning. Bishop, Holland and Mauldin all notched a pair of hits in the game, while Kerrigan Edmonson and Keith Lanum both doubled. Sauger drove in a pair of runs and Boren picked up the win on the mound.

Hewitt-Trussville swept a doubleheader against Northridge on Saturday, winning by scores of 11-4 and 7-4. Boren and Matt Miller were the two winning pitchers for the Huskies. In the first game, Parker and Edmonson each drove in two runs. Mauldin drove in a pair in the second game.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team had no trouble with Center Point, knocking off the Eagles 15-0 last Tuesday. Zach Nichols struck out nine and did not allow a hit in five dominant innings on the mound. Matthew Blahous drove in three runs for the Cougars, while Nichols and Evan Kincaid knocked in a pair each.

Springville handled Clay-Chalkville on Thursday, toppling the Cougars 11-1. Ashton Kincaid drove in the lone Cougars run.

Pinson Valley

Two runs in the sixth inning proved decisive, as Gardendale knocked off the Pinson Valley baseball team 5-3 last Tuesday. The Indians took a 2-1 lead on Joe Smith’s two-run single in the second and tacked on another run the following inning on Cameron Phillips’ single.

Pinson Valley fell to Shades Valley 9-3 on Wednesday, as the Indians were unable to hold onto their fourth-inning lead. Pinson Valley plated a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Mounties immediately put up four in the bottom half and rode that momentum to the victory. In the game, Drew Rickles notched a pair of doubles and an RBI.

The Indians rebounded on Thursday and picked up a convincing 13-3 win over McAdory in five innings. Pinson Valley put up eight runs in the third inning and jumped out to an 11-0 lead. In the contest, Rickles doubled and drove home five runs, while Hagen Giingras went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Barry White pitched all five innings on the mound, surrendering three runs on three hits while striking out six.

Pinson Valley fell to Jasper 9-1 on Friday afternoon, with William Tarpley driving in the lone run for the Indians.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began last week with a 5-4 win against Hoover. The game was moved to the Shea Brothers Softball Complex in Irondale due to wet field conditions at both schools. The Huskies got out to a 5-0 lead and hung on despite a four-run fifth inning from the Bucs. In that fifth inning, Hoover got two-run home runs from Hannah Presley and Campbell Hecklinski. Hannah Borden led the way offensively for the Huskies, hitting a two-run homer in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth.

Hewitt-Trussville overcame a slow start to beat Springville 8-5 on Tuesday. The Huskies trailed by four entering the seventh inning, before they strung together seven runs. Kailey Walters went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Kenleigh Cahalan also knocked in a pair. KK Hughes got the win in the circle, as she gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings of work.

The Huskies notched a win in their Class 7A, Area 6 opener on Thursday with a 17-0 win over Mountain Brook. Borden homered and drove in four runs and Walters had a triple and three RBIs. Hayden Neugent allowed just one hit and struck out eight in her four innings of work.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team began last week on Tuesday with a 16-7 loss to Oak Mountain. Rachel Smith picked up a pair of hits and homered for the Cougars in the loss.

Clay-Chalkville played a round robin event at Pelham over the weekend and notched a win among its four games. On Friday, the Cougars fell to Calera 16-1 and dropped an 18-0 decision to Mortimer Jordan.

The Cougars rebounded on Saturday and picked up a walk-off 7-6 win over Mountain Brook, as Calin Adaway’s two-run double lifted them to the victory. Mikaela Talton had two hits, an RBI and scored three runs. Mandi Parker also registered three hits and an RBI. Clay-Chalkville finished the event with an 11-8 loss to John Carroll after rallying from an eight-run deficit. Smith hit another home run in the game and drove in three runs.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team got last week off to a strong start with a dominant 23-0 win over Shades Valley. Ka’Mya Hampton and Hope Cole combined to no-hit the Mounties and the offense was led by Mollie Peoples, who went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs. Savannah Mayes registered three doubles and a triple and drove in four runs. Cole went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Mortimer Jordan put up 10 runs in the fourth inning to turn a scoreless contest into a 10-0 victory over Pinson Valley on Thursday. Jordan Walker recorded two of the Indians’ three hits.

Pinson Valley played in a round robin event at Pelham over the weekend and won three of its four games. On Friday, the Indians began play with a 7-0 win over Mountain Brook, as the Indians scored all of their runs in a big third inning. The frame was highlighted by a grand slam from Peoples. Raleigh Parrish and Kyla Smith combined to allow just two hits. The Indians fell to Hartselle 7-1 in the second game.

The Indians won both games Saturday, beginning with a 7-1 victory over Calera, as Peoples drove in two more runs. They wrapped up the day with a dominant 9-0 win over Jasper. Cole had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Mayes notched three hits and an RBI from the leadoff spot. Walker and Hampton each allowed just one hit in the combined shutout effort.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team (0-2-1) opened Class 7A, Area 6 play on Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to Vestavia Hills. The Huskies will play another area game on Monday, at home against Mountain Brook.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls fell (1-3-1) fell to Mountain Brook in overtime on Friday 2-1. This week, they’ll aim to rebound at Spain Park on Thursday.


TRACK AND FIELD

Hewitt-Trussville senior Stone Shelnutt competed on Saturday at the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet in New York City. He placed 11th in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 3.25 inches.

Closer to home, Hewitt-Trussville hosted the Husky Seven Way meet on Thursday. Julian Collins won the boys long jump with a leap of 22-6.5. Lea Townsend won the girls shot put with a heave of 35-8.
