BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team notched a 10-0 victory over crosstown foe Pinson Valley last Monday to start its week of action. Tyler Mauldin threw six no-hit innings to highlight the Huskies’ dominant performance. Hudson Boren led the charge offensively for Hewitt-Trussville, as he racked up three hits and four RBIs. Creed Parker and Jacob Bishop each registered a double and two RBIs.

Hewitt-Trussville dispatched Gadsden City 14-0 on Friday. The Huskies got a five-inning, two-hit shutout on the mound from Skylar Jones, who also struck out five. Jackson Holland had three RBIs, while Bishop and Mauldin each notched a double and an RBI. Zach Defnall tripled and scored three runs, while Keith Lanum had a double and scored two runs.

The Huskies swept a doubleheader with Boaz on Saturday, winning 10-8 and 5-0. Mauldin and Owen Boren earned the wins on the mound.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball notched a big 10-3 win over Mortimer Jordan last Monday. Ashton Kincaid led the charge offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. Noah Tatum went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored as well. Luke Moore drove home three.

The Cougars made another trip to Mortimer Jordan on Thursday, but this time the Blue Devils came out on top 4-1. Andrelle Tillman’s RBI single in the sixth inning accounted for Clay-Chalkville’s only run of the contest, as Mortimer Jordan’s four-run fourth inning was the difference. Tristan Walton started on the mound and went four innings, giving up four runs (all unearned) on five hits.

Clay-Chalkville got back in the win column on Friday with a 9-6 win over Minor. The Cougars had an 8-0 lead after five innings but had to withstand a Minor comeback over the final two frames. Zach Nichols got the win on the mound for the Cougars, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing two unearned runs with seven strikeouts. Kincaid led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.

Clay-Chalkville had its “Strikeout Cancer” day on Saturday and picked up an 11-5 win over Moody.

Pinson Valley

For Pinson Valley, Braeden Gilkey kept Hewitt in check through five innings, before Hewitt’s seven-run sixth inning ended the contest.

Pinson Valley tied the game in the seventh but ultimately fell to Moody 6-4 in nine innings on Tuesday evening. Hagen Gingras was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 for the Indians. Wiliam Tarpley started the contest for Pinson, going four innings and allowing four runs on three hits. TJ Chastain followed and put up three hitless frames. Drew Rickles and Joe Smith also plated runs for Pinson Valley.

The Indians knocked off McAdory 9-3 on Friday afternoon. Pinson Valley broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the fourth inning and cruised to the win. Smith’s bases-clearing double drove home three and capped off the big frame. Smith also got the start on the mound, going five innings and giving up two runs on three hits while striking out 12.

Pinson Valley knocked off Pleasant Grove 7-1 on Saturday.


SOFTBALL

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to John Carroll 14-4 in the Cougars’ home opener last Tuesday. Mikaela Talton was a bright spot for the offense, as she drove home two runs from the leadoff spot.

Clay-Chalkville played in Spain Park’s Jaguar Classic over the weekend and began things on Friday with a pair of pool games. The Cougars dropped both pool games, a 12-0 loss to Spain Park and a 13-1 defeat to Sumiton Christian.

Clay-Chalkville won its game on Saturday 8-4 over Pleasant Grove to conclude tournament play. In the game, Rachel Smith doubled and drove home three runs.

Pinson Valley

Pinson Valley’s softball team competed in the Rumble on the River in Pell City over the weekend. On Friday, the Indians won both of their pool games. They opened the day with a 5-4 win over Susan Moore. Pinson held a 2-0 lead through three innings, but Susan Moore struck for four runs in the top of the fourth. The Indians rallied in the bottom half and won on Anna Sullivan’s walk-off two-run hit.

The Indians then dominated Calera 13-0. Mollie Peoples had a big game, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBIs. Graci Graves had a pair of hits and drove home three runs. Kyla Smith had a three-run triple as well, while Jordan Walker pitched a two-hit shutout over four innings.

Pinson Valley dropped both of its games on Saturday. A first-inning run was the difference in a 1-0 loss to American Christian. Ka’Mya Hampton was strong on the mound, however, going five innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Lincoln knocked off the Indians 10-1 to conclude their run in the tournament. Shauna Clevenger doubled and drove in Pinson’s lone run.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team (0-1-1) didn’t play a game last week but is scheduled to play at Vestavia Hills on Tuesday in its Class 7A, Area 6 opener.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls fell (1-2-1) fell to Vestavia Hills 5-0 in their area opener last Tuesday. This week, they’ll host Homewood on Monday before playing an area match at Mountain Brook on Friday.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville track and field teams opened their outdoor seasons on Thursday at the Five Team Battle Royale, hosted by Mountain Brook.

The boys team placed third, while the girls team placed fourth.

Caleb Long (80-meter hurdles, 200-meter hurdles, javelin) won three events for the Huskies.
