HS Sports Update: Spring sports in full swing

BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team picked up an 8-4 win over Calera last Thursday evening. Tyler Mauldin earned the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing one run while striking out eight hitters. Benjamin Lamons picked up the save, allowing one run and striking out two in two innings of work. Michael Fowler led the offense, picking up a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Keith Lanum, Gavin Ellison and Mauldin each drove in a run as well.

Hewitt-Trussville took down Southside-Gadsden 8-2 on Friday. Skylar Jones threw the complete game, allowing three hits and striking out 10. Fowler and Trey Burrell each drove in two runs, while Hudson Boren had three hits. Mauldin, Jackson Holland, Burrell and Ellison each contributed two hits.

Hewitt-Trussville capped off the week by sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies first earned a 15-1 win over Sylacauga. Riley Quick earned the win on the mound, going five innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine. Lanum finished with two hits, Mauldin had three hits with a double, Fowler drove in two runs, Holland and Kahlin each had two hits and two RBIs, and Matt Miller slugged a grand slam and drove in five runs. The second game of the day was much different, as the Huskies prevailed 1-0 over Pelham in a low-scoring affair. Fowler drove in the only run for the Huskies, and Holland struck out 13 batters in five innings to earn the win. Mauldin also had two hits with a double.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team began last week on Tuesday with a 13-2 loss to Corner. The Cougars got back on track on Thursday, picking up a 4-0 win over Mortimer Jordan behind a combined no-hitter from the pitching staff.

On Saturday, the Cougars fell to Moody 6-3.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team suffered an 8-5 loss to Mortimer Jordan last Wednesday. Will Tarpley led the way for the Indians in defeat. He went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs, and threw two scoreless innings on the mound, striking out four.

Pinson Valley got back on track on Thursday with a 17-9 win over St. Clair County. The Indians gave up three runs in the first inning but responded with a nine spot in the second inning and scored in every following inning as well. Tarpley led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Hagen Gingras and Jordan Streety also drove in a couple runs as well. Barry White earned the win on the mound, with Sharode Pickett allowing just one hit in no runs in two innings of relief.

Pinson Valley lost both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. A 12-run sixth inning pushed Etowah past the Indians 18-13 in the first game of the day. The Indians also fell to Gadsden City 7-2.


SOFTBALL

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team began last week with a 7-1 loss to Springville on Tuesday. Lauren Hallmark drove in the lone run for the Indians in the game.

Pinson Valley suffered a tough 9-8 loss to Gardendale on Thursday, as Sarah Beth Brake hit a walk-off double to lift the Rockets to the win. Ka’Mya Hampton hit a double and home run and drove in four runs in the contest. Kyla Smith drove in two runs as well.

Over the weekend, the Indians played in Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa’s tournament. In their first game on Friday, Sparkman defeated Pinson Valley 6-1. The Indians rebounded in the second game to earn a 6-0 win over Demopolis. McKenzie Cagle led the team in the circle and at the plate. She hit two doubles and drove in two runs, and threw four hitless innings.

Pinson Valley finished tournament play on Saturday by splitting its two games. The Indians earned a 2-1 win over Sipsey Valley behind a strong pitching performance from Jordan Walker. She went four innings, allowing one run on three hits. The Indians then suffered a 5-4 loss to Hale County.


SOCCER

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys soccer team dropped three matches and won one match during the week. The Huskies lost 1-0 at Prattville on Feb. 25. 

Hewitt-Trussville traveled to the Florence Soccer Challenge in Florence to compete in three matches. The Huskies lost to Albertville 3-1 and then picked up a 1-0 win against Cullman in day one of the tournament. Hewitt-Trussville finished the tournament with a 4-1 loss to host Florence on Feb. 29.

The girls soccer team outscored opponents 15-0 in two matches during the week. The Lady Huskies started with a 4-0 win over Prattville on Feb. 25, but Hewitt-Trussville demolished Pinson Valley with an 11-0 margin on Feb. 28. 


TENNIS

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys and girls tennis teams faced Hoover and Altamont during the week. Both teams lost to Hoover 8-1 on Feb. 25, but then both teams came away with wins against Altamont. 

The girls swept Altamont 9-0 in their match with the boys winning 5-4 on Feb. 27. The girls are 4-2 and the boys are 5-3 on the season. 


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team walked away with a tournament win on Feb. 27. The Lady Huskies won the Winter’s End Tournament at Ol’ Colony Golf Club in Tuscaloosa. They shot a 247, which was six strokes better than the second-place finisher. 

Seventh-grader Molly Davidson shot one-under par to finish in second place among all female golfers competing.
