HS Sports Update: Huskies slug their way to Sidney Cooper title

BASKETBALL

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams saw their seasons end in the postseason. The boys finished as the runners-up in the area tournament but fell to Huffman 65-51 in the Class 6A sub-regional round on Feb. 11. The Cougars finished the season with a 15-14 record.

The Lady Cougars won the area tournament and earned a 70-47 win over Huffman on Feb. 10 in the sub-regional game. The girls earned their first trip to the Class 6A Northeast Regional for the first time since 2015, they fell to Fort Payne 61-46 on Feb. 14. Click here for a recap of that game.

The Lady Cougars finished the season with a 17-11 record.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley boys basketball team’s quest to repeat as state champs fell a couple steps shy. After winning the area tournament, the Indians blew past Shades Valley 80-64 on Feb. 11 in the Class 6A sub-regional round. In the Northeast Regional semifinals on Feb. 14, the Indians downed Oxford 70-67 in overtime. Last Tuesday, the Indians played another overtime contest, but this time Huffman prevailed 76-74. The Indians finished the season with a 28-4 record.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team finished tied for eighth in Class 7A at the state tournament on Feb. 15. 


BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team is off to a 4-1 start to the season. On Feb. 15, the Huskies opened the year with an 11-0 win over Calera. Skylar Jones threw a complete game, striking out six in five innings. Tyler Mauldin had three hits, with a double, triple, RBI and three runs scored. Trey Burrell, Hudson Boren and Gavin Ellison all tallied a double. Jackson Holland registered two hits, while Keith Lanum and Michael Fowler each scored two runs.

Last Monday, the Huskies were shut out by Wetumpka 2-0. They got back on the winning track on Friday in a 12-0 rout of Shades Valley. Mauldin threw a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 14 batters in the process. Holland had two hits and drove in three runs, Lanum hit a two-run double and Ellison also drove in two runs.

On Saturday, Hewitt swept Northridge in a doubleheader, winning 2-1 and 8-5. In the first game, Jones struck out six in six innings to pick up the win. Benjamin Lamons earned the save, striking out two in his inning of work. Boren had an RBI double and Ellison also doubled. In the second game, Riley Quick earned the win on the mound and Lamons earned another save. Boren and Kahlin Drake each racked up three hits.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team is off to a 1-2 start on the season. The Cougars fell to Mortimer Jordan 4-2 last Wednesday in the season opener. Kobe Lewis went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cougars in the game.

On Saturday, the Cougars split a doubleheader, falling to Mountain Brook 11-2 before beating John Carroll 16-13 in a high-scoring affair. Kendall Garner pitched well for Clay against Mountain Brook, as he went three innings, allowing just an unearned run. Against John Carroll, Garner tripled and drove in four runs. Tyler Hicks was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as well. 

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball is off to a solid start, posting a 3-2 record following a week of play. Last Monday, the Indians fell to Etowah, but they picked up their first win in an 8-2 triumph over John Carroll on Wednesday. In the win, Will Tarpley and Devin Kelly each posted two RBIs. Chris Calma got the win, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit.

On Friday, the Indians earned a 4-1 win over Hayden. Barry White was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while TJ Chastain went five innings on the mound, surrendering five hits and an unearned run.

Pinson split a doubleheader on Saturday, routing Cherokee County 14-4 and falling to Southside-Gadsden 4-1. In the win, Calma was 4-for-4 with three RBIs. White got it done at the plate and on the mound. He went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs with the bat, while earning the win with four innings of one-hit, one-run ball. He struck out seven as well.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team is 3-0-1 after opening the season last weekend at the Sidney Cooper Invitational, hosted by Central-Phenix City. The Huskies’ first game on Friday ended in a 0-0 tie with Spanish Fort, as the offense was unable to muster a hit. But KK Hughes was strong in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out seven in four innings.

On Saturday, the bats woke up in a big way, as the Huskies slugged their way to 10 home runs in three victories. In a 12-0 win over Gulf Shores, Jenna Lord had two home runs and six RBIs to lead the way. Crystal Maze went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Riley Tyree knocked in two runs. Sarah Hindman threw five shutout innings as well.

Hewitt followed that up with a 15-0 win over Enterprise. Kenleigh Cahalan slugged two homers and drove in four runs. Anyce Harvey homered and knocked in four runs, while Maze hit two more home runs. Hughes hurled four scoreless innings as well.

Hewitt-Trussville ended the day with a 4-2 win over Central-Phenix City, a state tournament team last year. Cahalan hit the go-ahead home run, while Lord hit another home run. Tori Hyde gave up two runs (one earned) in five innings.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville softball team has dropped its first four games of the season. The Cougars opened the season at the Leeds Round Robin last Monday, falling to Munford 5-3, Pleasant Grove 6-1 and Leeds 13-2. On Wednesday, the Cougars fell to Homewood 17-8. Zylan Dunning drove in three runs and Zoe Williamson had two RBIs for the Cougars. 

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team is 3-2 after beginning its season last weekend in the Central Alabama Classic. On Friday, the Indians fell to Benjamin Russell 2-0 before beating Foley 2-0. In the win over Foley, Kenzie Cagle allowed just one hit and struck out 10 batters in four innings. 

Pinson began the day on Saturday with an 8-5 win over Russell County, as Ka’Mya Hampton and Kylie Hicks homered. The Indians followed that up with a 6-3 win over Central-Clay County. Sasha Hughes homered, as she, Lauren Hallmark and Anna Sullivan each drove in two runs. In a 2-1 loss to Eufaula, Hughes supplied the only run with another homer. 


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer squad pulled out two wins during the Lakeshore Shootout on Feb. 14-15. The Huskies earned wins over Lake Oconee (Ga.), 4-1, and Albertville, 2-0. The Huskies fell to Oak Mountain 4-1 on Feb. 14.

The Huskies took advantage of its only game last week. The Huskies wasted no time defeating Woodlawn by an 11-0 margin on Wednesday.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls earned a win over Hoover 1-0 on Feb. 14.

The girls junior varsity team went on to win the Lakeshore Shootout Feb. 21-22. The team posted a 4-0 record with a 2-1 win over Vestavia Hills in the championship match.
