HS Sports Update: Huskies, Indians reach final four

BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team and Pinson Valley boys basketball team both advanced to the state final four for the first time in program history with their wins last week.

Last Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville knocked off defending state champ Spain Park in the Class 7A Northwest Regional final, and you can click here for a full recap of the game.

Pinson Valley won at the buzzer to defeat Huffman on Wednesday in the 6A Northeast Regional final. Click here for a recap of that contest.

This week, Hewitt-Trussville faces Auburn in the 7A semifinals on Thursday at 9 a.m. Pinson Valley plays Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Both games are at the BJCC.


BASEBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

Hewitt-Trussville’s baseball team began the 2019 season last Monday with a doubleheader sweep of Chilton County and Pell City.

The Huskies began the day with a 6-0 win over Chilton County, as Tyler Mauldin hurled a two-hit shutout while striking out six batters. Mauldin also registered two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Jacob Bishop, Zach Defnall and Michael Fowler each had two hits in the game, with Fowler and Defnall driving in a run each. Creed Parker notched two RBIs and Keith Lanum doubled.

Fowler struck out 12 batters in 4 2/3 innings in the Huskies’ 14-2 win over Pell City. Fowler also had another strong game at the plate, racking up two more hits and an RBI. Kerrigan Edmonson led the way offensively, with three hits (two doubles) and five runs batted in. Lanum drove home a pair of runs, Bishop had two hits and an RBI and Mauldin had a double among his two hits.

This week, the Huskies host Pinson Valley on Monday, travel to Gadsden City on Friday and play James Clemens and Hazel Green at Hazel Green on Saturday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team began its season last Saturday, taking down John Carroll 16-3 and losing to Mountain Brook 9-3. Against John Carroll, Demarcus Burris had a big game, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Jonah Freind pitched the final two innings, giving up just one hit.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley baseball team began its season last Monday with a 6-2 loss to Etowah. Blaine Crawley’s two-run single in the fifth cut the Pinson deficit to 3-2, but Etowah tacked on three more runs over the final two innings to pull away.

The Indians split a doubleheader at Mortimer Jordan on Saturday. Mortimer Jordan won the first contest 7-6, despite a few solid performances from the Indians. Chris Calma went 3-for-5 and scored three runs from the leadoff spot, Drew Rickles doubled and drove home two runs and Justin Deblieck went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The Indians picked up a 3-2 win in the second contest, as Joe Smith pitched a complete seven innings, surrendering three hits and two runs and striking out eight.

This week, Pinson Valley heads to Hewitt-Trussville on Monday, hosts Moody on Tuesday and hosts Pleasant Grove and Ramsay on Saturday for a doubleheader.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began its season last weekend by playing in the Sidney Cooper Invitational, hosted by Central-Phenix City.

On Friday, the Huskies won both of their pool games. In a 6-5 win over Auburn, Hannah Borden and Hannah Dorsett each registered two RBIs. The Huskies then dominated Park Crossing 22-2. Borden went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Riley Tyree and Abigail Dorsett each drove in three runs as well. KK Hughes threw three innings, giving up two hits and two runs while striking out three.

Hewitt-Trussville won its first two games on Saturday before falling in the semifinals. The Huskies began the day with a 5-2 win over Moody, as Molly Cobb belted a pair of home runs, while Borden slugged a two-run homer as well. Hughes threw two innings and surrendered a single hit. The Huskies rallied from a deficit to beat Central-Phenix City 8-3 in the quarterfinals, with Kailey Walters’ three-run home run proving pivotal. Tyree also plated two with a double.

Borden homered again and Maddie Katona went 2-for-2 in Hewitt’s 4-3 loss to Alabama Christian.

This week, the Huskies travel to Prattville on Thursday before playing in Spain Park’s Jaguar Classic over the weekend.

Clay-Chalkville

Clay-Chalkville’s softball team began its season at Gardendale’s round robin event last Monday. The Cougars played a pair of games, falling to Hueytown 15-7 and to Gardendale 17-0.

This week, the Cougars host Gardendale on Thursday before playing in Spain Park’s Jaguar Classic over the weekend.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley softball team started its 2019 campaign at the Leeds Greenwave Round Robin last Monday, dropping all four games it played. The Indians began things with a 3-0 loss to Mortimer Jordan, then lost to Chelsea 6-1. Against Chelsea, Mollie Peoples notched a pair of hits and Ka’Mya Hampton scored the Indians’ run. Pinson Valley was shut out by Shades Valley 8-1 before falling to Lincoln 7-1. Shauna Clevenger picked up two hits against Lincoln and Savannah Mayes drove in the Indians’ lone run.

The Indians played three more games on Saturday as part of the Central Alabama Classic in Alexander City. They picked up their first win of the season in an 8-3 victory over Horsehoe Bend. Clevenger and Jordan Walker each went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, with Clevenger accounting for three RBIs and Walker driving home two. Pinson Valley then fell to Tallassee 1-0 despite Hope Cole’s solid performance, as she threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed two hits and an unearned run. The Indians fell 4-0 to Woodland to end the day.

This week, Pinson Valley heads to Leeds on Thursday before playing in Pell City’s Rumble on the River tournament over the weekend.
