HS Sports Update: Townsend wins shot put

BASKETBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

Both Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams saw their seasons end last week in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. On Wednesday, the Lady Huskies fell to Vestavia Hills 58-55. Amiya Payne scored 19 points to lead Hewitt, with senior Erica Jones finishing her career with an 11-point game.

On Thursday, the boys team suffered a 63-48 loss to Spain Park. The Huskies were led by Jacolby Thomas, who scored 16 points. 

The girls finished the year with a 19-9 record and the boys with a 12-19 mark.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams advanced past the Class 6A, Area 12 tournaments last week. The Lady Cougars beat Pell City 53-40 in the tournament final on Thursday. The boys team beat Pell City 65-39 on Tuesday, with Daniel Beachem scoring 18 points. In the final on Thursday, Pinson Valley beat the Cougars 75-65. Donovan Shangase led the way with 26 points for the Cougars, with Beachem scoring 18 points as well.

The Lady Cougars are now 16-10 on the year and the boys are 15-13. Both teams play in the 6A sub-regional round this week. On Monday, the girls host Huffman and the boys travel to Huffman on Tuesday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley basketball teams played in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournaments last week. The Lady Indians saw their season come to an end on Tuesday in a 66-39 loss to Pell City. They finished the year with a 4-23 record.

The boys defeated Clay-Chalkville 75-65 behind 34 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals from Kam Woods. GaQuincy McKinstry chipped in 12 points, three assists and three steals as well. JoJo James and Cam Scott each scored 10 points.

This Tuesday, the boys host Shades Valley in the sub-regional round. The Indians currently possess a 26-3 record.


TRACK AND FIELD

The indoor track and field season concluded this past weekend with the state meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Lea Townsend was the Huskies’ lone individual podium finisher, as she won the shot put event with a throw of 38 feet, 4.75 inches. The boys 4x800 relay team also reached, finishing third in the event. The Huskies also with 13 individuals claiming all-state honors, along with four of their relay teams.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team competed in the Class 7A North Super Section tournament over the weekend. The Huskies placed fourth, scoring 122 points.
