HS Sports Update: Basketball teams conclude regular season

BASKETBALL

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team began the final week of regular season play last week at Wenonah on Monday, with the Lady Huskies earning an 86-71 victory. Amiya Payne had a huge game, going off for 37 points in the contest. Senior Erica Jones also added an impressive 22 points.

On Thursday, the Huskies honored their seniors as they hosted Gardendale. The Lady Huskies cruised to a 74-22 win, behind 27 points from Payne, 18 points from Jones and nine points from April Hooks. The boys also picked up a victory, winning 67-56. 

On Friday night, Hewitt-Trussville finished up the regular season with a trip to Center Point. The Lady Huskies earned a 52-29 win, while the boys fell 48-43.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls finished the regular season with a 19-8 overall record, while the boys are 12-18. This week, the Huskies are playing in the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. The girls tournament is at Spain Park and the boys tournament is at Mountain Brook. The girls face Hewitt-Trussville on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the boys play Spain Park on Thursday at 6 p.m. The girls final is Friday and the boys final is Saturday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams were back in action last Tuesday to start the last week of regular season play. The Lady Cougars fell in a close contest, 58-51. Sarah Kanady led Mortimer Jordan with 21 points on the evening. The Clay boys put forth a stifling defensive effort and took down the Blue Devils 59-18. Isiah Daniel scored 12 points and Daniel Beachem added 11.

Clay-Chalkville wrapped up the regular season on Friday evening by hosting Vestavia Hills. The Lady Cougars fell 48-37 while the boys picked up a 49-46 victory. Donovan Shangase led the team with 10 points in the victory, with Jake McDaniel, Daniel and Beachem all contributing nine points.

The Clay-Chalkville girls finished the regular season with a 15-10 overall record, while the boys are 14-12. This week, the Cougars play in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament. The girls host and will play the winner between Pell City and Pinson Valley on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The boys tournament is at Pinson Valley, with the Cougars facing Pell City in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The boys final is set for Thursday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley girls basketball team was back in action last Tuesday, falling to Northridge 72-29. 

The boys took a trip to Bessemer City on Wednesday and prevailed with a 59-54 victory. The Indians trailed for much of the contest, but held Bessemer City to just seven points in the final period to win. Kam Woods led the charge with 39 points, six steals and three assists. GaQuincy McKinstry finished with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals.  

On Thursday, Pinson Valley wrapped up the regular season against Gadsden City. The Lady Indians fell 60-41, while the boys grabbed an 82-59 win. Woods tallied 37 points, five rebounds and three steals on the night. McKinstry went for 14 points, six steals and four assists. JoJo James had 10 points and four steals, while Cam Scott posted 10 rebounds, three blocks and six points. 

The Pinson boys finished the regular season with a 25-3 overall record, while the girls sit at 4-22. This week, the Indians will begin postseason play with the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament. The boys will host the winner between Pell City and Clay-Chalkville on Thursday at 7 p.m. The girls will play Pell City in the semifinals at Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., with the winner to play Clay-Chalkville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the Last Chance Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex last weekend. For the Hewitt girls, Maci Mills finished seventh in the 800-meter run and ninth in the 1,600. Sydney White was second in the high jump and Kaylie Love was ninth. Love was also sixth in the long jump, followed by White in seventh. White and Love also finished fifth and ninth in the pentathlon, respectively. Lea Townsend won the shot put event.

For the boys, Alex Jones was ninth in the 800, Caleb Kettering was sixth in the 1,000, Aaron Himes and Nathan Knox placed third and fifth in the 1,600. Knox was ninth in the 3,200 and Kettering was seventh in the 60 hurdles. Julian Collins was seventh in the triple jump, Syed Raza was fifth in the shot put and Kettering placed seventh in the pentathlon. 

The state meet is this weekend at the Birmingham CrossPlex.


WRESTLING

Last Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team swept a quad-match. The Huskies beat Dora 60-15, Brookwood 71-9 and Oak Grove 84-0.
