HS Sports Update: Indians knock off unbeaten Lee
BASKETBALL
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams returned to action last Tuesday evening at Spain Park in a Class 7A, Area 6 matchup. The Lady Huskies fell to the Jags 65-49, as Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 37 points in the game. Erica Jones paced Hewitt with 16 points, with Amiya Payne scoring 12 points and Jordan Hunter adding 10. The Hewitt boys fell 69-67 on a last-second shot from Cam Crawford. The Huskies erased a big deficit to tie the game late, but were unable to get over the hump. Cam Glover led the way with 23 points for the Huskies, with J’Vhan Durgan chipping in 11 points and Colin Glover scoring 10. Josh Harrington led Spain Park with 17 points.
Hewitt-Trussville wrapped up area play on Friday against Mountain Brook. The Lady Huskies earned a 71-43 win and the boys fell 71-58. On Saturday, the Hewitt boys hosted Hoover at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School for “Throwback Night.” Hoover won the game 59-49.
The Hewitt-Trussville girls are now 16-8 overall and finished 3-3 in area play. The boys are 11-17 overall and went 2-4 in area play. This week, the girls host Park Crossing on Monday, both teams host Gardendale on Thursday and both teams are at Center Point on Friday to wrap up the regular season.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams earned a split with Class 6A, Area 12 foe Pinson Valley on Tuesday evening. The Lady Cougars picked up a 47-30 win over the Indians to finish 4-0 in the area slate. The boys team fell to the Indians 67-58. Kam Woods led Pinson with 32 points. For the Cougars, Donovan Shangase scored 13 points and Jaden Johnson added 12 points.
Clay-Chalkville earned a split with Fort Payne on Friday. The girls lost their first game in over a month in a 56-25 loss, while the boys picked up a 67-59 win. Shangase led the charge with 28 points, Johnson scored 14 and Daniel Beachem added 13 points.
The Clay-Chalkville girls are now 15-8 overall and the boys are 12-12, finishing 2-2 in area play. This week, the Cougars host Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday and Vestavia Hills on Friday to finish up the regular season.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley boys basketball team capped off the MLK Roundball Classic last Monday by taking on host Fairfield in a battle of the top-ranked teams in Classes 5A and 6A. The Indians trailed for much of the contest, but earned their 20th win of the year in a 68-65 victory. Kam Woods led the charge with 34 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. GaQuincy McKinstry had a strong game as well, going for 28 points and five steals. Cameron Scott had six points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Pinson Valley hosted Class 6A, Area 12 foe Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday evening. The Lady Indians suffered a 47-30 loss but the boys earned a 67-58 win. Woods led the way with 32 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. McKinstry filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. JoJo James had 10 points and nine rebounds, one board shy of a double-double. Cam Scott went for eight points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks in a big defensive effort.
On Thursday, the Indians finished up the area slate against Pell City. The girls fell 51-35 and the boys dominated to the tune of a 92-53 victory. In the game, Woods had 35 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. McKinstry went for 18 points, five assists and four rebounds. Scott added 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks and Morrez Calloway chipped in 11 points and six boards.
On Saturday, the boys pulled off an impressive 83-82 win over previously unbeaten Lee-Montgomery. The Indians overcame an 18-point halftime deficit to come back and take the lead late on a pair of Woods free throws. Woods went off for a career-high 52 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. McKinstry finished with 12 points, five boards, three assists and three steals. Scott notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pinson Valley boys are now 23-3 overall and finished 4-0 in area play. The girls are 4-20 and finished 0-4 in area. This week, the boys are at Bessemer City on Monday and both teams host Gadsden City on Thursday to finish the regular season.
BOWLING
Both Hewitt-Trussville bowling teams advanced to the state tournament, held last Thursday and Friday at Oak Mountain Lanes. The first day of play was used to determine seeding for bracket play on Friday. The Hewitt boys earned the No. 5 seed but fell to No. 12 Hoover 1,579-1,485 in the first round. The Hewitt girls were the No. 9 seed and fell to Hazel Green 1,073-1,055 in the first round.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team finished third last Monday in the Dick Clem presented by Comunidad Connect at Bob Jones. On Saturday, the Huskies placed fourth in the Coahulla Creek Classic in Dalton, Ga.
