HS sports recap: Busy week for basketball teams

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.

BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville basketball teams returned to action last Monday. The Huskies hosted Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa and the Cougars hit the road to Shades Valley.

Hewitt’s girls took down the visiting Patriots 45-28. Three Lady Huskies hit double figures, led by April Hooks, who had 15 points and 2 assists in the game. Jordan Hunter went for 13 points, 3 assists and 5 rebounds. Ashlyn Howard contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds as well.

The Hewitt boys beat Hillcrest by a 45-29 score, as the Huskies played strong defense. Ray Rolley led the team with 12 points, while Reid Stodghill joined him in double figures with 11 points. Legion Gaston contributed 8 points as well.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls picked up a solid road win, beating Shades Valley 45-37. Kameron Sanders paced three players hitting double figures, leading the way with 15 points. Kamoriah Gaines notched 13 points and Brooklyn Phillips finished with 10 points. The Clay boys took a tough 62-59 loss.

Hewitt-Trussville returned to its home court Tuesday evening, hosting Southside-Gadsden. The Lady Huskies ran away with a 70-46 win. Audre Benson led the charge for the team, going off for 22 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Hooks added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Hunter filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. 

Hewitt’s boys picked up a 48-36 win over Southside. Stodghill notched 12 points and Gaston added 10 points for the Huskies.

Clay-Chalkville went on the road to Pell City on Thursday and left with a couple of tight losses. The Lady Cougars fell to the Panthers 58-54. Sanders finished with 24 points to lead the way, while Gaines scored 16 points. The boys fell 55-51 in a close one. Mike Snow led Pell City with 22 points. 

Pinson Valley also hit the road Thursday, traveling to Oxford and taking a 63-43 win. The Indians trailed by a point at the half, but outscored the Jackets 26-9 in the third quarter to pull away. Terry Coner Jr. led the Indians with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Caleb White finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Raymon McCants went for 12 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds, while Amari Bowens had 10 points and 3 steals.

Hewitt-Trussville hosted Austin on Friday night and emerged with a split. The Lady Huskies dominated in a 60-29 win. Hooks led the way with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals in the game. Hunter posted a double-double and filled up the stat sheet, going for 18 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in a standout showing. Benson notched 10 points and 5 steals.

Hewitt’s boys suffered a 60-54 loss in overtime. Stodghill scored 16 points to lead the Huskies, while Rolley scored 14 points and Gaston added 13.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls traveled to Jackson, Tennessee, and fell to Jackson South Side 65-44 on Saturday.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the Holiday Invitational last Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Several Huskies made the podium in their events. For the girls, Brianna Beckham finished second in the 60-meter dash and was third in the 400. Avery Cahoon placed second in the 800, Tori Mack was third in the 60-meter hurdles and the 4x200-meter relay team was second.

On the boys side, Tristan Teer finished third in the 3,200, Manny Cazeau was third in the 60 hurdles and Michael Igbinoghene finished third in the triple jump.

WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team split a tri-match last Tuesday, falling to Huntsville 45-26 but defeating Madison County 66-10.

The Huskies won their first match in the Class 7A, Region 3 duals with a 43-24 win over Chelsea on Thursday. The Huskies got victories from Clark Box (106 pounds), Riley Hulwi (113), Bradley Hastings (120), Alec Nelson (126) and Ian Hodgin (132) to open up a 26-0 lead in the match. Jacob Triplett also won in extra time for the Huskies. Charlie Buttiker, Hunter Jones and Zack Chatman also earned wins.

Hewitt-Trussville competed in the Swede Umbach Invitational in Auburn over the weekend, finishing fifth out of 24 teams.

Jones won the 195-pound division, Box was second in his class, and Hastings and Max Medero (152) were fourth in theirs.

Hewitt also sent a team to the Spartan Invitational at Mountain Brook and finished 12th.
