HS sports recap: Huskies bowling teams notch key wins
Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.
BASKETBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team took to the road last Monday and fell to a strong Mortimer Jordan team, 55-52. April Hooks was the high scorer in the game, as she went for 16 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. She also added 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Jordan Hunter posted 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists as well. For Mortimer Jordan, Jaylen Pleasant scored 13 points, Sarah Kanaday notched 12, Kendra Davis scored 11 and Haley Russell finished with 5 points and 10 rebounds.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys and Clay-Chalkville took the floor on Tuesday, with the Huskies earning a big win and the Cougars splitting at Spain Park.
The Huskies knocked off perennial power Mountain Brook 48-39 at Bryant Bank Arena. Hewitt had a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter and finished strong to take the victory. Legion Gaston was the leading scorer for the team, as he scored 16 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. Emeka Anwah scored 8 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, including a late 3-point basket. Reid Stodghill sank four free throws in the final quarter and finished with 8 points.
Clay-Chalkville’s girls had an impressive 61-18 win over Spain Park. Kamoriah Gaines had a 23-point night, while Kameron Sanders added 13 points and Kimora Brewster notched 8 points. Spain Park’s boys beat Clay 61-45. Zach Gray finished with 23 points to lead the way for the Jags, while Chase James had 15 points and 5 assists and Sam Wright notched 12 points and 11 rebounds. Devin McKinnon led the way for the Cougars with 17 points. Tiawan Hardy Jr. had 10 points and Kevin Kirk Jr. tallied 9 points.
Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley played again Thursday, with Clay traveling to Huffman and Pinson hosting Paul Bryant.
The Lady Cougars came up just short in a 37-32 defeat against Huffman. Sanders led Clay with 14 points. Jamiria Jones had 18 points for Huffman, with Tamiria Jones and Destinee Nelson each adding 6 points. Clay’s boys suffered a 53-38 loss to the Vikings.
The Indians cruised past Paul Bryant 67-31. Caleb White was the high scorer, going for 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Amari Bowens had 16 points and 2 steals, Terry Coner Jr. finished with 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, and Austin Coner contributed 10 rebounds and 3 assists to the winning effort.
Hewitt-Trussville played again on Friday, hosting and sweeping Park Crossing.
The Lady Huskies blew past Park Crossing 69-26, led by a Hunter triple-double. She posted 11 points, 10 assists and 10 steals in a great game. Hooks was the high scorer, as she poured in 29 points and added 6 rebounds. Audre Benson also had 17 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
The boys team locked down Park Crossing in a 50-31 win. Stodghill scored 18 points to pace the team, while Legion Gaston added 11 points.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team fell to Mountain Brook 39-31 last Tuesday. In that match, Clark Box (106 pounds), Bradley Hastings (120), Alec Nelson (126), Jack Besse (145), Chris Hawkins (220) and Zack Chatman (285) all won for the Huskies.
The Huskies competed in the Gardendale Invitational over the weekend, finishing eighth out of 29 teams. Delvecchio Alston was the top wrestler, finishing third in the 170-pound class.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls bowling teams notched key region wins against Gadsden City last Wednesday. The boys won 1,379-1,116. Eko Burroughs rolled a 216 to lead the way. The girls won 904-832. Jia Jones rolled a 147 to lead the way.
The boys team is now 9-1 overall and 7-0 in region play. The girls 7-2 overall and 5-1 in region play.
