HS sports recap: Indians win Heritage Classic

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


BASKETBALL

Many of the local high school basketball teams returned to the court last week on Monday in Thanksgiving week events.

On the girls side, Clay-Chalkville took down Minor 65-29 in Oak Mountain’s Thanksgiving Classic. Brooklyn Phillips led the way for the Lady Cougars with 19 points. Kameron Sanders followed close behind with 18 points, and Kamoriah Gaines finished with 11 points.

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys began play in the Thompson Thanksgiving Invitational with a 52-39 win over Northridge on Monday.

Pinson Valley’s boys picked up a 94-61 win over Blount in the opening round of the Heritage Classic at Fairfield on Monday. Caleb White led the way for an impressive effort for the Indians, going for 28 points and 3 steals. Terry Coner Jr. had 23 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Amari Bowens added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Austin Coner finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, while Chauncey Thirkill added 10 points and 5 boards as well. 

On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville’s girls continued the Hartselle Thanksgiving Classic with a 62-28 win over Lee-Huntsville. April Hooks had a big game, finishing with 21 points, 3 steals and 3 rebounds. Jordan Hunter went for 15 points, 5 steals and 5 assists. Audre Benson nearly had a double-double, posting 11 points, 6 assists and 9 rebounds. 

Clay-Chalkville’s girls wrapped up the Thanksgiving Classic at Oak Mountain with an impressive 69-40 win over Prattville. Gaines had a huge game, posting a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Phillips went for 11 points and Cheyenne Pearson added 10 points.

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys fell on a last-second shot to Auburn, losing 68-66 in overtime in the semifinals of the Thompson Thanksgiving Invitational. 

Pinson Valley won in the quarterfinals of the Heritage Classic, beating Midfield 47-37 in a defensive contest. Coner Jr. went for 17 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists to lead the way for the Indians. White had 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Austin Coner had 10 rebounds and 5 steals.

Pinson Valley went on to win the Heritage Classic on Wednesday with two more wins. The Indians got past Fairfield 72-52 in the semifinals. White had a strong game, going for 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Terry Coner Jr. had 16 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Austin Coner wrapped the game with 13 points and 4 steals. Raymon McCants finished with 10 points, while Clyde Walters nearly had a double-double with 9 points and 10 boards.

The Indians then blew out Lee-Montgomery 81-42 in the final. Coner Jr. finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds, White had 14 points and 5 assists, Coner had 14 points and 2 assists, McCants notched 13 points and 4 steals and Walters had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Indians made 15 3-pointers, grabbed 15 steals, took four charges and knocked down 50% of their field goals. 

Hewitt-Trussville capped off the Thompson Thanksgiving Invitational with a narrow 48-45 win over Briarwood. Legion Gaston led the Huskies with 14 points, while Ray Rolley added 10 points. Grant Mears had 14 points for Briarwood, while Drew Mears tallied 13 points.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team competed in the Boo Harmon Memorial Duals last Tuesday at Pell City. The Huskies fell to Gardendale 39-36, then beat Shelby County 48-36 before falling to Mortimer Jordan 45-36. 

In consolation bracket play, the Huskies fell to St. Clair County 41-29 and lost to Chelsea 53-24. 

On Wednesday, Hewitt-Trussville hosted the Patrick Aaron Memorial Duals and finished second as a team.

The Huskies started things out with a 69-9 win over Daphne. In the match, Gavin Bittle (113 pounds), Bradley Hastings (120), Alec Nelson (126), Ian Hodgin (132), Jack Besse (145), Jacob Triplett (160), Charlie Buttiker (170), Joshua Moore (182), Jackson Strange (195), Chris Hawkins (220), Zack Chatman (285) and Clark Box (106) all earned wins.

Hewitt then knocked off Sparkman 64-15, as Hastings, Nelson, Hodgin, Besse, Triplett, Delvecchio Alston (170), Cameron Cantwell (182), Hawkins, Chatman, Box and Riley Hulwi (113) earned wins.

In the semifinals, Hewitt beat Homewood 45-33, with Triplett, Buttiker, Cantwell, Hawkins, Chatman, Box, Hulwi and Hastings emerging victorious.

Mortimer Jordan toppled Hewitt-Trussville 46-27 in the final.
