HS sports recap: Lady Huskies win 3

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.

BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville basketball teams returned to action last Tuesday night, as Hewitt traveled to Austin and Clay-Chalkville played Shades Valley.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls knocked off Austin 67-23, while the boys fell 49-42 in a tight ball game.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls came up short, falling 54-51. The Lady Cougars rallied back from a 16-2 deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback. Kameron Sanders led the team with 19 points, and Brooklyn Philips poured in 18 points on the strength of six 3-pointers.

Clay-Chalkville’s boys ran away with a 73-49 victory over the Mounties. Kevin Kirk Jr. led the Cougars with 19 points and 5 rebounds, while Cordae Averette posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Devon McKinnon notched 11 points and Tiawan Hardy Jr. finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds. 

Oak Mountain paid a visit to Clay-Chalkville on Thursday night, with Clay prevailing in the girls game and the Oak Mountain boys pulling out a close victory.

Clay-Chalkville put together a solid performance to win the girls game 55-40. Kamoriah Gaines led the Lady Cougars with 18 points in the game, with Sanders adding 13 points and Cheyenne Pearson finishing with 11 points.

Oak Mountain came out on top 68-64 in the boys game. Matthew Heiberger scored 21 points to lead the way, as 10 different Eagles scored. Jack Ronilo notched 9 points as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville played road games on Thursday, as the Lady Huskies traveled to Gadsden City and the boys played at Hueytown, both teams coming away with victories. Hewitt’s girls won 57-44 and the boys ran away with a 64-32 win.

In the girls win, the Huskies got off to a quick start, opening up a 17-7 lead and grabbing a 33-19 halftime edge. April Hooks finished the game with a team-high 15 points, converting on 4-of-7 3-point attempts. Jordan Hunter scored 14 points, making 8-of-11 shots from the free throw line. Audre Benson added 9 points. 

The boys started off fast as well, jumping out to a 39-16 lead at halftime. After Hueytown chipped away at the deficit, the Huskies put together a run at the end of the third to take a 50-28 edge. Reid Stodghill finised the game with 17 points and 8 rebounds to lead the way for the Huskies. Emeka Anwah went for 17 points as well after pouring in 13 in the first half. Ray Rolley had 8 points and 5 assists, and Karnell Smith added 8 points. 

Pinson Valley’s boys improved to 3-0 with an 80-35 win over Woodlawn on Friday night. Caleb White led the charge with 30 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Terry Coner Jr. had 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in a strong game. Amari Bowens finished with 15 points and 5 boards as well. 

On Saturday, Clay-Chalkville hosted Haleyville. The girls picked up a blowout win and the guys suffered a narrow defeat.

In the girls game, the Lady Cougars dominated to the tune of a 61-10 victory. Gaines scored 13 points to lead a balanced scoring effort, while Tyra Bynum and Telecia Ransom each finished with 8 points. The boys fell 61-52.

Hewitt-Trussville began play in the Hartselle Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday with a dominant 76-39 victory over Austin, the Huskies second triumph over the Black Bears in the week. 

WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team hosted the Hewitt Early Season Duals over the weekend and finished second. The Huskies defeated Shades Valley 82-0 in the first round, beat St. Clair County 62-12, defeated Mae Jemison 68-6 and beat Springville 78-6. The only match the Huskies lost was to Scottsboro, a 46-31 defeat.
