HS sports recap: Huskies football season ends

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


FOOTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville football team suffered a 28-11 loss to Hoover last Friday night in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs. Click here for the recap of the game.

Hewitt-Trussville finishes the season with an 8-4 record.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls basketball teams took to the road to begin last week, as they swept Park Crossing in Montgomery on Tuesday. The girls opened things up with a 55-34 win, with Jordan Hunter leading the way with 14 points and 4 steals in the game. Audre Benson also reached double figures, scoring 10 points and adding 8 rebounds. Mia Ada went for 11 points, 6 steals and 4 rebounds. April Hooks added 10 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of blocks on the night.

The Hewitt boys had to work a little harder, but emerged with a 56-50 victory in overtime. Legion Gaston led the way with 21 points for the Huskies, as he converted on 9-of-11 free throw attempts during the game. Karnell Smith scored 5 points in overtime and finished with 11 in the game. Emeka Anwah scored 13 points and Braxton Brown drained three 3-pointers to score 9 points.

Clay-Chalkville opened the season Tuesday with a home sweep of Pell City. The Lady Cougars held a double-digit lead at times but were never quite able to put away the Panthers until the end, as a late basket won the game. Kamoriah Gaines scored 17 points to lead the way, with Brooklyn Phillips adding 9 points. 

The boys had an easier time of things, getting a 64-47 win over the visitors. Devon McKinnon paced the Cougars with 22 points. Kevin Kirk and Da’Von Cheatham each went for 10 points, while Tiawan Hardy Jr. tallied 8 points.

Clay-Chalkville went on the road and Thursday and picked up dominant wins over Fultondale. The Lady Cougars cruised to a 62-7 win, as Kameron Sanders led the team with 11 points. Cheyenne Pearson added 10 points as well.

The Cougars rolled in the boys game as well, winning 62-17. Hardy Jr. led a balanced scoring effort with 11 points. Colin Owens and Devin Finley each added 6 points, while Kirk scored 5.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls suffered their first loss of the season in a 60-35 loss to Hazel Green on Saturday as part of the Sweet HOMElife Tip-Off Challenge at Mortimer Jordan.


FLAG FOOTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville girls flag football team fell to Oxford 14-0 last Monday in the state quarterfinals. The loss ends the Huskies’ season.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team opened the season last Saturday at the Southeastern Duals, hosted by Thompson. The Huskies finished seventh in the team competition.

Hewitt-Trussville began the day with a dominant 47-18 win over Spain Park. Gavin Bittle (113 pounds), Clark Box (120), Alec Nelson (126), Bradley Hastings (132), Jack Besse (152), Charlie Buttiker (170), Cameron Cantwell (182) and Chris Hawkins (220) notched wins for the Huskies in that match.

Hewitt then fell to Central-Carroll 39-38 in the next match, followed up by a 42-31 loss to Thompson’s Red team. 

Hewitt knocked off Tift County 53-22 in the seventh-place match. Hastings, Nelson, Besse, Jacob Triplett (160), William Rivers (170), Braxton Reaves (182), Hawkins, Box and Riley Hulwi (120) won for the Huskies.
