HS sports recap: Huskies wrap up cross-country season

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.

FOOTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville football team won its Class 7A first round playoff game last Friday, beating Florence 38-20. Click here for the recap of the game.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley had their seasons ended in the opening round of the 6A playoffs last week. The Cougars were upset by Parker 7-6, while Pinson Valley fell to Mountain Brook 49-7. Clay-Chalkville finished the season with a record of 8-2, while Pinson wrapped with a 6-4 mark.

This Friday, Hewitt plays at Hoover in the quarterfinals.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls cross-country teams competed in the Class 7A state meet last Saturday at Oakville Indian Mounds Park. Both teams placed seventh in the team competitions. The boys team scored 177 points to beat Spain Park by seven points, while the girls scored 202 points to finish in a tie with James Clemens and six points ahead of St. Paul’s.

Tristan Teer ran a great race to lead the Hewitt-Trussville boys, as he finished fifth, running the 5k in 15 minutes, 19 seconds. Wes Ellison was 23rd to give the Huskies another strong performance. Rush Lachina (55th), Jacob Mullinax (64th) and Garrett Yokeley (66th) scored points for the team. Brooks Maddox, Oscar Spears, Mason Lachina, Joel Himes and William Gallant also ran the race.

The girls team was led by Kinley Harris, who finished 14th with a time of 19:16. Avery Cahoon finished 29th, while Kylee Sisk was 44th and Sophia Knox was 62nd. Lauren Ruf, Amberli Santiago, Bella Bales, Sophie Bryant and Meah Goodell all competed for the team.

FLAG FOOTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville girls flag football team won its qualifying tournament last week to advance to the state quarterfinals. Last week, the Huskies beat Gardendale 36-7 before beating Clay-Chalkville 34-6.

Hewitt plays Oxford on Monday in the quarterfinals.

BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls basketball teams opened the season last Thursday night with resounding wins over Gadsden City.

The girls team cruised to a 59-38 win over the visiting Titans. Jordan Hunter led the Lady Huskies in scoring, posting 15 points and adding 3 assists and 5 rebounds. April Hooks drained three 3-pointers to post 12 points, adding 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Ashlyn Howard eclipsed double digits as well, going for 10 points and 7 rebounds. Audre Benson and Mia Ada each tallied 9 points.

The boys team opened up the Jeremy Monceaux era with a 54-24 win over Gadsden City. Two Huskies reached double figures in their new coach’s debut, as Emeka Anwah led the way with 14 points and Ray Rolley added 11 points. Legion Gaston scored 9 points as well.

Pinson Valley’s boys opened up the season at the Park Crossing Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, winning a pair of games. The Indians knocked off Wenonah 85-71 before defeating Charles Henderson 87-62.

In the Wenonah win, Amari Bowens led the Indians with 25 points and 4 rebounds. Terry Coner Jr. also reached 20 points, adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Caleb White nearly had a double-double, going for 18 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds. Austin Coner finished with 10 points and 5 steals.

Against Charles Henderson, White took the scoring load, posting 29 points and 4 assists. Coner Jr. had 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Bowens notched a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Ray McCants finished with 11 points as well.
