HS sports recap: Huskies track and field excels at section

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville High School sports.


SOFTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team celebrated senior night with a 5-2 win over Pell City last Tuesday. Chaney Peters had a standout performance for the Huskies, going 3-for-4, hitting a double and a home run, and driving in 3 runs. AhKeela Honeycutt hit a solo home run as well in a multi-hit game. Sara Phillips was strong in the circle, going the complete 7 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 13 batters. For Pell City, Nyla Treptau doubled and drove in both runs. Addy Simmons pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief as well.

Hewitt-Trussville hosts the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament this week.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team finished in a scoreless draw with Huntsville last Tuesday.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team hosted the Class 7A, Section 3 meet last weekend. The Huskies finished second in the boys and girls competitions.

The boys 4x100-meter relay team of Nathan Thomas, Malachi Johnson, Jadon Loving and Michael Igbinoghene set a school record with a winning time of 41.71 seconds.

Brianna Beckham won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Tori Mack won the 100-meter hurdles. DJ Carter won the discus competition. The girls 4x400 relay team of Beckham, Hailey Tolbert, Libby Armstrong and Emmie Goodell finished second and set a school record as well. 

Beckham (100 and 200), Tolbert (200 and 400), Avery Cahoon (400, 800 and 1,600), Goodell (400), Kinley Harris (1,600 and 3,200), Mack (100- and 300-meter hurdles), Haven White (100 hurdles and pole vault), Arianna Fisher (300 hurdles), 4x100 relay (Beckham, Mack, Jayda Hammonds and Tolbert), 4x400 relay (Beckham, Tolbert, Armstrong and Goodell), 4x800 relay (Cahoon, Mary Durham, Sophie Bryant, Goodell), Catherine Asbury (high jump), Hammonds (long jump), Haley Melton (long jump and triple jump), Audre Benson (triple jump), Kennedy Gill (long jump), Sarah Johnson (pole vault), Madisyn Hawkins (discus and shot put), Haleigh Chambers (javelin) and Berkeley Hawkins (shot put) all qualified for state for the girls team.

State qualifiers from the boys team included Michael Igbinoghene (100, long jump and triple jump), Loving (100), Nathan Thomas (100), Malachi Johnson (200), Colin Wadsworth (200), Manny Cazeau (400, 300- and 110-meter hurdles), Tyrone Reese (400, 300- and 110-meter hurdles), Wes Ellison (800 and 1,600), Tristan Teer (1,600 and 3,200), Rush Lachina (3,200), Dylan Cope (110 hurdles), 4x100 relay (Thomas, Johnson, Loving and Igbinoghene), 4x400 relay (Cazeau, Hudson Bates, Wadsworth, Reese), 4x800 relay (Lachina, Teer, Oscar Spears, Ellison), Will Owens (high jump), Sam Simmons (high jump), Shaw Helfrich (pole vault), Daniel James (pole vault), Alex Jones (pole vault), Skyler Carrillo (discus and shot put), Carter (discus and shot put), Blake Barlow (javelin), Brent Russell (javelin), Aaron Tan (javelin) and Braxton Armstrong (shot put).

The state meet is this weekend in Gulf Shores.


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team won the Wildcat Invitational in Fort Payne last Monday. Morgan Hooper was named to the all-tournament team after shooting a round of 83. Aubrey Payne also fired an 83. Kellyn Cox shot an 85 to round out the team scoring.
