HS sports recap: Huskies soccer notches big win

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville High School sports.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team began a key Class 7A, Area 6 series last Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Oak Mountain in nine innings. Grayson Pope earned the walk-off hit, bringing home a run on a well-executed bunt. Rob Wright also drove in a run for the Huskies. Will Argo threw all 9 innings for Hewitt, allowing a single run on 5 hits, with 7 strikeouts. For Oak Mountain, Nick McCord had a pair of hits and stolen bases. Matt Heiberger knocked in a run in addition to his stellar start on the mound, as he went 7 innings, allowing a run on 3 hits, striking out 9 batters.

Hewitt-Trussville finished off the sweep Thursday, beating Oak Mountain 9-5. Kurt Kizer and Grayson Pope sparked the Huskies offense, as both drove in 3 runs in the game. Brett Moseley knocked in a pair of runs, while Wright also drove in a run. TJ Chappell hit a triple and Jack Ollis doubled as well. Christian Helmers threw the complete game, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings of work. For Oak Mountain, Heiberger hit a solo homer, and Brooks Braswell and Boyd Dela Vega drove in runs as well. Alex Harrison hit a double and Kevin Jasinski tallied a pair of hits. Erik Oxford was solid in relief, allowing only an unearned run in 3 2/3 innings. 

Chelsea picked up a 2-0 win over Hewitt-Trussville on Saturday in an area tiebreaker game, as the Hornets earned a spot in the playoffs with the victory. Morgan and Cody Fortenberry each hit doubles and knocked in a run to lift the Chelsea offense. Kaden Heatherly got the start and threw 2 scoreless innings, striking out 6. Moller came on and fired 4 2/3 scoreless innings to seal the deal. Helmers, Kizer and Jack Ollis all finished with multiple hits for the Huskies. Colby Durden threw a good game, allowing only a hit and no runs over 5 innings. 


SOFTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began play last week with an impressive 8-1 win over Hartselle. For the Huskies, Olivia Faggard had a multi-hit game, tallying a double, 2 runs batted in and 2 stolen bases. Gracie Reeves had 2 hits and a double as well, driving in a run. Hannah Dorsett went 3-for-3, scoring 3 times and stealing 4 bases. Sara Phillips was sharp in the circle, throwing the complete game and allowing just a run on 4 hits, with 11 strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville picked up an area win with a 13-1 win over Oak Mountain on Wednesday. The Huskies hit five home runs in the contest, with AhKeela Honeycutt, Faggard, Lexie Kelly, Dorsett and Chaney Peters all going deep. Phillips threw another gem, allowing an unearned run on 2 hits in 5 innings of work, with 7 strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville grabbed another area win Thursday, toppling Chelsea 5-3. Peters and Kelly each registered a pair of hits, combining to drive in 3 runs. Zaylen Tucker swiped 3 bases, while Kate Hicks pitched 6 strong innings in relief, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts. For Chelsea, Kathryn Bryars hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs. Claire Purkey threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing only an unearned run on 5 hits.

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Hoover Classic on Friday. In the first game, the Huskies knocked off Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 6-0. Phillips fired a no-hitter, not allowing a hit or run over 7 innings, as she struck out 9 batters as well. Peters drove in a pair of runs for the offense.

The Huskies then took down Ardmore 6-4. Peters hit another homer and knocked in a pair of runs. Tucker was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI in a solid performance as well. Phillips threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing a run on a hit. She struck out 6 batters as well.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls soccer teams had varying results last Tuesday. The boys earned a pivotal 5-0 victory over Spain Park, while the Lady Huskies suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Spain Park.

On Friday, the Huskies boys and girls both fell to Hoover by 2-1 scores.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team hosted the Hewitt-Trussville Invitational over the weekend.

Avery Cahoon won the 400-meter dash, running the race in 57.93 seconds. Tori Mack won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.63 seconds. Madisyn Hawkins won a couple events, winning discus in 126 feet, 1 inches, and winning shot put at 37-8. The girls 4x800-meter relay team won in 10:25 as well.

Tristan Teer won the 3,200-meter run in 10:03, Manny Cazeau won the 300 hurdles in 39.43 seconds and DJ Carter won two events. He won the discus in 154-10 and won the shot put in 52-3. 

Other girls to reach the podium were Cahoon (second in 800), Callie Armstrong (third in 3,200) and Haley Melton (second in triple jump). For the boys, Colin Wadsworth (second in 400), Hudson Bates (third in 400), Wes Ellison (second in 3,200), Tyrone Reese (second in 300 hurdles), the 4x800 relay (third), Sam Simmons (third in high jump), Michael Igbinoghene (second in long jump) and Daniel James (second in pole vault) were on the podium.

The Huskies will host the section meet later this week.


GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville boys golf team won the White Plains Invitational on Wednesday. Gavin Isbell led the Huskies by shooting a round of 4-under par. Colten Sutton shot even par, and Austin Freeman (+2), Charlie Crowson (+3) and Clayton Healy (+4) all contributed as well.
