HS sports recap: Huskies win Jag Classic

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville High School sports.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team began last week with an 11-1 win over Mortimer Jordan on Monday. Christian Helmers got the start on the mound, going 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 9 batters. Kurt Kizer tallied 2 hits, including a double, and drove in 4 runs. Drew Ollis tallied 2 hits and a double. Brett Moseley registered a pair of hits and scored twice. Grayson Pope drove in 2 runs as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville picked up a 7-0 win over Springville on Tuesday. Will Argo and Eayn Thomas combined for a 1-hit shutout in the game, striking out 11 total batters. Brett Moseley hit a pair of triples, driving in a run and scoring a pair of runs. Kizer drove in 3 runs, Drew Ollis had a double and 2 hits, Carson Wideman had 2 hits and an RBI, and Jack Ollis and Rob Wright drove in runs as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville played in the East Alabama Classic over the weekend. The Huskies fell to defending Class 7A state champion Central-Phenix City 6-5 on Thursday.

Hewitt-Trussville notched a win Friday, beating Auburn 8-5. Ryan Davis got the win on the mound, going 6 innings. Trey Tyldesley came on to earn the save. Carson Wideman got a hit and drove in a pair of runs, while Kurt Kizer, Brett Moseley, Carson Zeitvogel and Drew Ollis each drove in runs. Rob Wright scored twice and Grayson Pope got a hit as well. 

Hewitt-Trussville finished the event with a 6-5 win over Opelika on Saturday. Helmers pitched another strong game, picking up the win after going 6 innings and striking out 6 batters. Will Argo came on for the final inning to earn the save. Jack Ollis hit a homer and hit a double. TJ Chappell tallied a pair of hits and drove in a run, Pope hit a double and drove in a run, and Wideman hit a run-scoring triple.


SOFTBALL

Hewitt-Trussville took a road trip Tuesday and beat Southside-Gadsden 14-3. Sarah Beth Golden and Olivia Faggard hit home runs, with Golden knocking in 3 runs and Faggard registering 4 hits and 2 RBIs. Ryleigh Wood had a strong game, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 2 RBIs. AhKeela Honeycutt was 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs, while Rubie Simon also had a double and 3 runs batted in. Hannah Dorsett also had 3 hits in the contest. Kate Hicks threw 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. 

Hewitt-Trussville traveled to Wallace State Community College on Wednesday for a game against Austin, with the Huskies grabbing a 6-3 win. Chaney Peters and Wood were each 2-for-3 with an RBI, as Zaylen Tucker, Hicks and Sara Phillips combined for the win in the circle. Tucker allowed 2 runs in 3 innings, while Hicks and Phillips each threw 2 innings. 

Hewitt-Trussville played in the Jag Classic hosted by Spain Park over the weekend. The Huskies began play with a pair of wins Friday. In a 4-3 win over Haleyville, Dorsett hit her first career home run. She had a pair of hits and drove in 2 runs, while also stealing 2 bases. Hicks threw 3 hitless and scoreless innings, striking out 3 batters. The Huskies then routed Cullman 12-0. Honeycutt hit 2 more homers in the game, driving in 4 runs. Lexie Kelly went deep as well, and Simon hit an inside-the-park homer with 3 RBIs. Dorsett was 2-for-2 with a triple and 3 runs scored. Faggard had a double and drove in a pair as well. Kinley Poe threw all 5 innings, allowing no runs and a lone hit. 

Hewitt-Trussville made a run Saturday to win the tournament. The Huskies began the day with a 6-1 win over Calera. Kelly hit another homer, while Peters and Faggard each knocked in 2 more runs. Dorsett was 3-for-3 with 3 runs and a pair of stolen bases. In the circle, Poe threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Hicks threw 2 1/3 innings.

The Huskies then edged a strong Hartselle team 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Faggard hit a solo homer to pace the offense, while Phillips threw 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 9 strikeouts to lead the team to the win. She only allowed solo homers to Hartselle’s Katie Norgard and Brityan Godfrey. Blayne Godfrey struck out 14 batters in 5 innings. 

In the semifinals, Hewitt knocked off Brooks 5-0. Tucker had a standout performance, as she tallied 3 hits and 3 RBIs at the plate, while throwing 6 scoreless innings in the circle. She allowed just 2 hits in the contest. Brooks’ Abby Herndon threw all 6 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned). 

Hewitt blew out Pell City 11-0 in the championship game. Faggard hit a homer, driving in a pair of runs. Kelly had 2 RBIs as well. Dorsett scored 3 runs and Tucker notched 3 hits, with both swiping 5 bases in the game. Peters went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Phillips threw a no-hitter in the ball game, striking out 12 batters in 5 innings of work.


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams were back in action last Tuesday, with area matches against Chelsea. The girls beat the Hornets 3-0 and the boys pulled off a 2-0 win. Both of Hewitt’s varsity coaches, Daniel Decker and Lauren Wooten, played high school soccer at Chelsea. 

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys picked up a big 3-1 win over Spain Park on Friday. Spain Park’s girls earned a 3-0 win over the Huskies.


TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field teams won for the third consecutive meet last Saturday, as the boys and girls finished first at Vestavia Hills’ King of the Mountain Invitational. 

Individual winners:

Michael Igbinoghene competed at the New Balance Nationals last week in Boston. He placed 23rd in his long jump event, reaching 21 feet, 1.5 inches.
