HS sports recap: Huskies host Hewitt Invitational

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.

BASEBALL

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team fell to Corner 7-3 last Monday. Xavier Edwards drove in 2 of the Cougars’ 3 runs, going 2-for-3 in the contest. Ayden Boatwright knocked in a run as well. Malyc Grant was a bright spot on the mound, as he threw 3 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 unearned runs, with 3 strikeouts.

Clay-Chalkville earned its first win of the season Tuesday, beating Shades Valley 11-3. Nic Youngblood led things for the Cougars, getting a pair of hits and driving in 3 runs. Jay Sexton had an RBI and stole a couple bases, while Tyler Griffin had 3 runs and 3 stolen bases. Austin Ray threw the complete game, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in his 7 innings. He struck out 11 in the contest.

Hewitt-Trussville blew out Wetumpka 10-0 on Tuesday. Christian Helmers threw the shutout, allowing a pair of hits with 13 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. Kurt Kizer, Carson Zeitvogel and Carson Wideman knocked in a pair of runs each. Grayson Pope and Jack Ollis each notched a pair of hits and an RBI as well. 

Clay-Chalkville fell to Moody on Saturday, losing 20-1 and 15-5 in a doubleheader. In the first game, Jay Sexton hit a double. Youngblood knocked in a pair of runs in the second game.

SOFTBALL

The Clay-Chalkville softball team fell to Ramsay 10-0 last Tuesday. Hewitt-Trussville dropped a 3-2 decision to Pell City on Tuesday in 8 innings. Pell City scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth. Hannah Dorsett was 3-for-3 with a run batted in and 3 stolen bases. Zaylen Tucker pitched well, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with 10 strikeouts. Pell City’s Addy Simmons threw a strong game as well, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) in 7 innings.

Mountain Brook blew past Clay-Chalkville 17-0 on Wednesday. Annie Gregory led the Spartans, going 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBIs at the plate in addition to throwing 3 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts. Marianna Murray had a pair of hits and drove home 3 runs, while Emma Stearns and AT Goldman each drove in a pair of runs. Ellie Pitts had an RBI, 3 runs and 2 stolen bases, with Marrison Kearse going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. 

Hewitt-Trussville hosted the Hewitt Invitational over the weekend and won three out of four games it played Saturday. The Huskies started things with a 7-5 win over North Jackson. Chaney Peters, Sarah Beth Golden and Olivia Faggard all homered in the game. Gracie Reeves had multiple hits and an RBI as well. Kate Hicks threw 3 innings in the game, allowing a run on a hit. Hewitt then fell to Tuscaloosa County 2-1. Zaylen Tucker allowed just 2 runs over 6 innings, but County’s Alyssa Faircloth allowed a single run over her 6 innings, with 14 strikeouts. 

Hewitt got the bats going in a 16-3 win over Austin. AhKeela Honeycutt and Golden each homered in the game, as the two combined for 7 RBIs. Rubie Simon had a pair of doubles and drove in 3 runs as well. Hicks threw 2 hitless and scoreless innings as well. Austin’s Arden Breedlove drove in a pair of runs for the Black Bears.

The Huskies wrapped up the day with a 10-4 win over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Dorsett went 2-for-4 with triple and 2 RBIs. Faggard and Honeycutt each drove in a pair of runs. Tucker threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits.

SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys soccer team was back in action last Tuesday, beating Indian Springs 1-0.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls team tied 1-1 with James Clemens on Wednesday.

On Friday, Hewitt’s boys fell to Homewood 3-1.

GOLF

The Hewitt-Trussville girls golf team recently finished second out of 14 teams at the Lady Panther Invitational. Kiersten Riggs led the Huskies with a round of 82. Morgan Hopper and Audrey Payne both shot 85, while Emma Bark shot 94.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team hosted the Husky March Classic last weekend. 

Brianna Beckham was a winner in multiple events for the Huskies, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.24 seconds, and winning the 200 in 24.98 seconds. Tori Mack won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.7 seconds. Haley Melton won the triple jump, reaching 34 feet, 11 inches. Madisyn Hawkins also won the discus with a throw of 120-5. The girls 4x100-meter relay team also claimed top prize, running it in 48.76 seconds. 

DJ Carter was an individual winner for the boys team, winning the shot put with a throw of 52-11. Michael Igbinoghene was victorious in triple jump, reaching 44-2.25. Sam Simmons triumphed in high jump, clearing 6 feet. The 4x100 relay won in 42.2 seconds as well.

Avery Cahoon (third in 800), Mack (second in 300 hurdles), Melton (second in long jump) and Hawkins (second in shot put) reached the podium on the girls side. Nathan Thomas (second in 100), Igbinoghene (third in 100 and third in long jump), Jadon Loving (third in 200), Manny Cazeau (third in 300 hurdles), the 4x400 relay team (second), Jamal Hobbs (third in high jump) and Carter (second in discus) were podium placers for the boys as well.

BOWLING

The high school bowling all-state teams were released last week. Hewitt-Trussville’s Tristan Atwood was named to the overall first team and Jacob Smith was named to the overall second team. Atwood was also named Class 6A-7A first team all-state. Tommy Abney was named 6A-7A boys coach of the year as well. Brodie Payne was named honorable mention.

Anna Abney was named first team overall and in 6A-7A on the girls side,
