HS sports recap: Huskies win Battle Royale

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team fell to Sparkman last Tuesday in the regional final. Click here for the story of the game.

On Wednesday, Clay-Chalkville’s girls and Pinson Valley’s boys suffered losses in the regional finals as well. Click here for the recap.


BASEBALL

The Clay-Chalkville baseball team opened last week with a 15-5 loss to Leeds on Monday. For Clay, Xavier Edwards hit a double and knocked in a pair of runs. Jay Sexton also registered an RBI in the game. 

Clay-Chalkville fell to Shades Valley 19-3 on Tuesday. Edwards knocked in a pair for the Cougars, while Jay Sexton was 2-for-2 with an RBI as well. Tyler Griffin had 2 hits and a double, and DJ Barber hit a double as well.

Hewitt-Trussville took down John Carroll 5-1 on Tuesday. Brett Moseley led the charge for the Huskies, going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Drew Ollis knocked in a pair, while Carson Zeitvogel drove home a run as well on a pair of hits. Jack Ollis scored 3 runs. Ryan Davis threw 7 hitless and scoreless innings for the Huskies as well, striking out 6. For John Carroll, Jackson Miller knocked in a run. Braxton Williams threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts. 

Hewitt-Trussville earned another win, beating Northridge 9-8 on Wednesday. Trey Tyldesley earned the win in relief for the Huskies. Zeitvogel led the way offensively, with a pair of hits, a double and 2 RBIs. Carson Wideman and Grayson Pope each registered a pair of hits, Moseley hit a double, and Trace Barlok and TJ Chappell added hits of their own. Jack Ollis, Drew Ollis and Kurt Kizer knocked in a run each. 

Clay-Chalkville fell to Corner 12-0 and Helena knocked off Hewitt-Trussville 15-6 on Thursday.

Hewitt-Trussville fell to Pelham 3-0 on Friday.

Clay-Chalkville suffered a pair of losses Saturday, falling to Archbishop Hannan 9-0 and to St. Clair County 8-0.


SOFTBALL

The Clay-Chalkville softball team began last week with a wild 12-11 win over Homewood on Tuesday. For the Cougars, Kaidyn Williams tallied a pair of hits and 3 runs batted in to lead the way. Anna Campbell and Ladonna Scott each knocked in a pair of runs as well. Jerica Tyree was also 2-for-4 with an RBI, 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. For Homewood, Madison Letson was 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBIs. Abigail Box and Allie Stuman each registered a pair of hits and 2 RBIs. Kate Jourdan tripled and drove in a run, while Grace Pilgrim pitched 5 solid innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 4.

Pinson Valley knocked off Clay-Chalkville 10-2 on Wednesday.

Hoover outlasted Hewitt-Trussville 7-4 in 8 innings Thursday, as Bella Foran hit a 3-run home run in the 8th inning to lift the Bucs to the win. Also for Hoover, Hannah Christian had a pair of hits, including a triple, and drove in a run. Lindsey Westhoven was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs as well. Olivia Christian was strong in the circle, throwing 6 innings and allowing a pair of runs. For Hewitt, Gracie Reeves knocked in a pair of runs and Kate Hicks threw 7 2/3 innings.

Clay-Chalkville beat Ramsay 14-10 on Thursday in a wild game. Williams drove in 3 runs for the Cougars, while Tyree scored 3 times. Scott drove in a run and scored 4 times, while Campbell had 2 RBIs. 

Clay-Chalkville played in the Locust Fork Tournament over the weekend. On Friday, the Cougars fell to Locust Fork 9-0 and to Boaz 8-1. The Cougars fell to West End 3-1 on Saturday.


SOCCER

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys soccer team beat Stanhope Elmore 3-0 last Tuesday.

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls edged Mountain Brook 1-0 on Wednesday.

Hewitt’s boys earned a big 3-2 win over Vestavia Hills on Thursday.


OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville outdoor track and field team began the season last Thursday at Mountain Brook’s five-team Battle Royale.

Brianna Beckham took home a pair of titles for the Huskies, as she won the 150-meter dash in 18.49 seconds and was the winner of the 300 in 40.75 seconds. Tori Mack grabbed a pair of individual wins as well, taking the top prize in the 80-meter hurdles in 10.76 seconds and winning the 200 hurdles in 28.94 seconds. Madisyn Hawkins won the discus throw, reaching 119 feet, 1 inch.

Manny Cazeau won the 200 hurdles on the boys side in 24.04 seconds. The 4x100-meter relay team also won, running in 42.04 seconds. Jamal Hobbs won the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-1. Michael Igbinoghene won a pair of competitions, going 23-2 in the long jump and 45-0.75 in the triple jump to win both. DJ Carter also won two events, throwing the discus 138-4.5 and the shot put 51-10. 

For the girls, Hailey Tolbert was second in the 300, Avery Cahoon was second in the 1,000 and second in the 2,000, the 4x300-meter relay team was third, Catherine Asbury was second in high jump, Haley Melton was second in long jump and second in triple jump, Haven White was second in pole vault and Hawkins was second in shot put.

Reaching the podium for the boys were Nathan Thomas (second in 150), Jadon Loving (third in 150 and third in long jump), Colin Wadsworth (second in 300), Hudson Bates (third in 300), Wes Ellison (third in 1,000 and third in 2,000), Cazeau (third in 80 hurdles), 4x300 relay team (second), Will Owens (third in high jump), Dylan Cope (third in triple jump), Aaron Tan (third in javelin) and Skyler Carrillo (second in shot put).
