HS sports recap: Lady Cougars head to regional final

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


BASKETBALL

The Clay-Chalkville girls basketball team cruised past Cullman 62-37 last Monday in the Class 6A sub-regional round, advancing to the regional tournament. The Lady Cougars were led by Kamoriah Gaines, who scored 18 points in the contest. Kimora Brewster scored 14 points and Brooklyn Phillips added 10 points.

The 6A boys sub-regional games were Tuesday. Clay-Chalkville fell to Cullman 64-37, as the Cougars season came to a close with the loss. Pinson Valley’s boys made a statement in a 75-45 win over Hartselle. The Indians featured four double-figure scorers in the contest, led by Terry Coner, who had 18 points and 4 assists. Caleb White added 14 points and 3 rebounds. Clyde Walters posted a double-double, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Amari Bowen tallied 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Raymon McCants finished with 8 points.

The Hewitt-Trussville girls rolled to victory in the Class 7A Northeast Regional semifinals on Wednesday, as the Lady Huskies routed Huntsville. Click here for the story of that game. 

Hewitt-Trussville’s girls play Sparkman on Tuesday in the regional final, while Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville play Wednesday.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team wrapped up the season over the weekend in Huntsville at the Class 7A state tournament. The Huskies finished fourth, totaling 133 points. Vestavia Hills won with 210 points, Thompson finished second with 195 points and Huntsville was third with 157 points.

Two Huskies won individual state titles. Clark Box won the 106-pound division, going 4-0 and beating Huntsville’s Kiyan Simon in the final. Hunter Jones won at 195 pounds, finishing 4-0 as well and beating Spain Park’s Kyle Oliveira in the final. 

Zack Chatman finished second at 285, reaching the final. 

Bradley Hastings at 120 pounds and Chris Hawkins at 220 pounds won their third-place matches.

Deuce Alston (170) and Cameron Cantwell (182) each placed fifth.

Alec Nelson (126) and Charlie Buttiker (160) also competed for the Huskies. 


SOCCER

The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls soccer teams notched wins last Tuesday. The boys beat Shades Valley 9-0, while the girls beat Southside 7-0.

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys lost to Helena 2-1 in penalty kicks on Wednesday. The Huskies rebounded to beat Sparkman 3-2 on Friday.

Hewitt’s girls played in the Lakeshore Shootout over the weekend. The Huskies beat Daphne 4-0, beat LaGrange 4-1 and edged Montgomery Academy 2-1.


BASEBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team began the season last weekend with a sweep. The Huskies beat Haralson County (Georgia) 5-4 and defeated Gadsden City 8-1.


SOFTBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville softball team began the season last weekend at the Red & Blue Classic, hosted by Vestavia Hills. The Huskies beat Brookwood 13-2, lost to Helena 8-3, beat Sparkman 3-1 and defeated Brooks 4-0 to start the season 3-1.
