HS sports recap: Huskies bowling teams compete at state

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


BASKETBALL

The local basketball teams returned to the court last Tuesday night, as Hewitt-Trussville played Oak Mountain in Class 7A, Area 6 competition, while Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville squared off in an area rivalry.

Hewitt-Trussville earned a split with Oak Mountain, as the Lady Huskies posted a 77-32 win to clinch the area title. Jordan Hunter had a big night, going for 29 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. April Hooks went for 16 points, 3 rebounds and a pair of assists. Sara Phillips even added a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Audre Benson registered 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Hewitt’s boys suffered a tight 48-43 defeat to the Eagles. Oak Mountain’s Matt Heiberger led the way with 20 points and 7 rebounds.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley split the varsity contests. The Lady Cougars took care of business in a 63-25 victory. Clay had four double-digit scorers in the contest, with Cheyenne Pearson’s 14 points leading the way. Kamoriah Gaines scored 13 points, Brooklyn Phillips added 12 point and Kameron Sanders posted 11 points. 

Pinson Valley posted a 62-50 win over Clay to remain unbeaten on the season and clinch the area title. Leading the way for the Indians was Caleb White, who posted a double-double with 27 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Raymon McCants had 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Jaylan Tyus added 10 rebounds.

Pinson Valley held onto its perfect record Thursday with a 79-74 win over Jeff Davis. White went off for 35 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. McCants finished with 17 points and 4 rebounds, Terry Coner had 11 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of assists, and Clyde Walters finished with 10 rebounds, 4 blocks and 7 points. 

Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville wrapped up area play Friday night.

Hewitt-Trussville picked up a home sweep of Spain Park. The girls started things with a dominant 81-17 win. Five Lady Huskies reached double figures on the night, with Hooks leading things with 18 points on the strength of six 3-pointers. She also added 3 assists. Benson posted 16 points, 5 assists and 6 steals. Hunter, Deandrea Powell and Phillips all had 13 points, with Hunter adding 4 steals and assists as well.

The Hewitt boys earned a 42-40 upset win over Spain Park, as Ray Rolley scored a late basket to lift the Huskies to the win. Rolley also led all scorers with 20 points. Emeka Anwah scored 8 points and Legion Gaston tallied 7 points. Sam Wright led Spain Park with 16 points. 

Clay-Chalkville earned a split with Mortimer Jordan. The Lady Cougars came close, but came up short 50-45. Pearson led the team with 14 points and Sanders added 11. Jaylen Pleasant led the Blue Devils with 14 points.

Clay’s boys posted a dominant 62-27 victory. Devon McKinnon went for 10 points and 4 rebounds to lead the Cougars. Erin Callens had 9 points and 6 rebounds, while KJ Kirk went for 8 points and 4 rebounds. 


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team beat Arab 51-23 last Thursday. Winning matches for the Huskies were Max Medero (152 pounds), Delvecchio Alston (170), Hunter Jones (195), Zack Chatman (285), Clark Box (106), Riley Hulwi (113), Bradley Hastings (120), Alec Nelson (126), Ian Hodgin (132) and Jacob Triplett (145). 

Hewitt-Trussville finished second in the Heaton Memorial Duals at Daphne over the weekend. In pool play, the Huskies defeated Prattville 51-26, beat Vancleave 83-(-3), beat Fairhope 78-0, defeated Daphne 49-29 and knocked off Spanish Fort 59-24. In the semifinals, the Huskies beat Foley 58-21. Hewitt fell to Bob Jones in the final, 48-18.


INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the Last Chance meet last Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. 

For the girls, Brianna Beckham won the 400-meter dash in 57.57 seconds. Tori Mack finished second in the 60-meter hurdles, Madisyn Hawkins finished third in the shot put and the 4x200-meter relay team finished second.

For the boys, the 4x200 relay team was victorious. Manny Cazeau was third in the 60-meter hurdles, Will Owens was third in high jump, Jadon Loving and Michael Igbinoghene were second and third in long jump, Igbinoghene was second in triple jump, Daniel James was third in pole vault and DJ Carter was third in shot put.


BOWLING

The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls bowling teams made it to the Class 6A-7A state tournament last week in Gadsden. 

The boys were the No. 4 seed entering bracket play on Friday, but Hartselle knocked the Huskies out with a 4-2 win. Hartselle won the first game 178-156, before the Huskies rallied to win the second game 183-182. Hewitt won the next one as well, 169-163, but Hartselle won the last three games to take the match.

The girls team was the No. 8 seed entering bracket play and was swept by Stanhope Elmore in the opening round.
