HS sports recap: Huskies basketball picks up area wins

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


BASKETBALL

The Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley basketball teams returned to the court last Monday.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls beat Lee-Huntsville 53-46 as part of the Ball-N Prep MLK Day Classic at Hoover. Brooklyn Phillips led the way with 18 points, while Cheyenne Pearson had 11 points.

Clay’s boys hosted and beat Etowah 70-49. Three Cougars posted double figures, led by Tiawan Hardy Jr.’s 15 points and 4 rebounds. Devon McKinnon had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Cordae Averette went for 10 points, 4 rebounds and a block as well.

Pinson Valley beat Fairfield 60-56 in the MLK Day Basketball Classic. Caleb White led the way with 20 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Clyde Walters had 13 points and 8 rebounds, while Terry Coner also had 13 points, adding 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Amari Bowens finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Hewitt-Trussville took to the road to take on Central-Phenix City, with both Huskies teams claiming tight victories. The Lady Huskies earned a 53-46 win. Audre Benson went for 20 points, 8 steals and 4 assists. Jordan Hunter added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Hewitt’s boys picked up a 54-49 victory. Reid Stodghill put forth 16 points, Ray Rolley added 13 points and Karnell Smith scored 9 points.

Pinson Valley’s boys took a win in the 256 vs. 205 Challenge on Wednesday night, as the Indians beat Huntsville 67-59. White led the way once again, with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and a pair of assists. Terry Coner had 18 points, 4 rebounds and a pair each of assists and steals. Walters finished with a strong 11 points, 6 boards, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Raymon McCants added 10 points as well.

Pinson Valley returned to area play Thursday night, beating Mortimer Jordan 66-37. Coner led the Indians with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. McCants had 15 points, 4 steals and 3 boards. Walters also reached double figures, notching 10 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.

The local teams were back in action Friday.

Hewitt-Trussville swept Chelsea in area action, as the Lady Huskies started things with a 57-42 victory. April Hooks led the way, with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Benson added 14 points and 3 boards, while Sara Phillips posted 11 points and 7 rebounds. Hunter registered 8 points, 7 assists and a pair of blocks as well. 

The Huskies boys pulled out a 61-59 win over the Hornets. Legion Gaston had a big night, going for 18 points to lead the way. Stodghill scored 14 points, Rolley added 11 and Smith and Emeka Anwah each added 8 points. 

Clay-Chalkville took on non-area foe Center Point and picked up a sweep. The Lady Cougars won 48-18, as Kamoriah Gaines led the team with 12 points. Phillips scored 11 points and Aniyah Crenshaw added 6 points.

The boys team picked up a 67-41 win as well. Hardy was the high scorer in a balanced effort, as he had 11 points and 3 rebounds. KJ Kirk picked up 8 points and 4 steals, while McKinnon, Victor Odiari and Immanuel Dothard all posted 7 points.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team finished third out of 18 teams at the Dick Clem Memorial, hosted by Bob Jones last Monday.

Clark Box won the 108-pound weight class and Chris Hawkins won it all at 222 pounds. Bradley Hastings (122) finished second in his class, Charlie Buttiker (162) was third, and Alec Nelson (128), Ian Hodgin (134), Ricardo Max Medero (154) and Joshua Moore (184) were each fourth.

The Huskies beat Pelham 56-15 on Wednesday. Winners for the Huskies included Box, Riley Hulwi (113), Hastings, Hodgin, Medero, Buttiker, Delvecchio Alston (170), Jackson Strange (182), Hunter Jones (195), Hawkins and Zack Chatman (285). 

Hewitt-Trussville also finished second at the Ragsdale Tournament over the weekend. Box, and Hulwi won their weight classes, Buttiker, Alston and Chatman finished second, and Hastings, Hodgin and Mason Holloway (222) each placed third.


INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed at the MLK Indoor Track Classic last Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

On the girls side, Tori Mack finished second in the 60-meter hurdles. For the boys, Michael Igbinoghene placed third in the long jump and DJ Carter was third in the shot put. The boys 4x200-meter relay team also finished second.
