HS sports recap: Cougars win a pair

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.

BASKETBALL

The Hewitt-Trussville and Pinson Valley basketball players returned to the court last Tuesday night for area play.

Hewitt-Trussville earned a split with Oak Mountain. The Lady Huskies blasted Oak Mountain 74-31, as their top three guards had big games. Jordan Hunter had 22 points, 4 assists, 8 rebounds and a pair of blocks to lead the way. Audre Benson and April Hooks each went for 14 points. Benson added 4 steals and 4 rebounds, while Hooks grabbed 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Sara Phillips also notched 9 points and 9 rebounds, just shy of a double-double.

The Hewitt boys fell just short, losing 63-62. Ray Rolley went for 18 points to pace the Huskies, with Emeka Anwah adding 17 points. Legion Gaston also scored 11 points. Matt Heiberger paced Oak Mountain with 15 points.

Pinson Valley went to 2-0 in area play with an 88-43 win over Mortimer Jordan. Caleb White led five double-digit scorers for the Indians, going for 26 points, 4 steals and 3 rebounds. Terry Coner had 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Amari Bowens had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Raymon McCants added 12 points, while Austin Coner finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Clay-Chalkville hosted and took down Hueytown on Wednesday evening. The Lady Cougars cruised to a 63-30 win, as four players reached double figures on the night. Kamoriah Gaines scored 18 points to lead the way, while Cheyenne Pearson added 13 points. Kameron Sanders and Brooklyn Phillips each posted 11 points.

The boys picked up a hard-fought 62-55 win over the Golden Gophers. Devin Finley led a balanced attack with 12 points and 6 rebounds in the game. Devon McKinnon joined him in double figures with 11 points, 3 rebounds and a pair of steals. Tiawan Hardy Jr. finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Victor Odiari added 9 points, 4 boards and 2 steals.

Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville returned to area play Friday evening.

Hewitt-Trussville earned a split with Spain Park. The Lady Huskies dominated in a 67-18 win, as their main three had strong games yet again. Benson had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals. Hunter added 14 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Hooks finished with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 6 steals.

Hewitt’s boys fell to the Jags 56-36. Zach Gray, Chase James and Sam Wright each had 15 points for Spain Park. Reid Stodghill led the Huskies with 12 points. Gaston added 9 points and Rolley finished with 7.

Clay-Chalkville played Mortimer Jordan, finishing with a split. The Lady Cougars fell in overtime 66-59. Sanders led the team with 12 points and Phillips added 11. Jaylen Pleasant and Keyarra Scottland led Mortimer Jordan with 17 points each. Haley Russell added 16 points and 13 rebounds as well.

In the boys game, Clay picked up a 57-36 win. McKinnon was the leading scorer for the Cougars, finishing with 13 points and 5 rebounds. KJ Kirk had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Odiari had another solid game, going for 9 points and 7 boards.

Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley played in the Jerry Bartley Invitational at Midfield on Saturday. Clay fell 56-52 and Pinson picked up a 78-74 win over McAdory.

WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team split a tri-match last Thursday. The Huskies beat Pinson Valley 53-24 and fell to Homewood 46-35.

Hewitt-Trussville finished sixth out of 18 teams over the weekend at the Southeastern Pools at Thompson. Jack Besse was the top finisher for the Huskies, as he finished fourth in the 138-pound class. Riley Hulwi (113), Alec Nelson (126) and Chris Hawkins (220) each finished fifth.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the Hump Day Octameet last Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Brianna Beckham won the 60-meter dash in 7.78 seconds. Arianna Fisher won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08 as well. The girls 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams were also victorious. Madisyn Hawkins won the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 6 inches.

On the boys side, Nathan Thomas won the 60 in 7.04 seconds. The 4x200 relay also won. Jamal Hobbs won the high jump by clearing 6-1, Jadon Loving won the long jump by reaching 21-9.25, Michael Igbinoghene won the triple jump at 42-1, Daniel James won pole vault by clearing 13-3 and DJ Carter won shot put at 48 feet.

Avery Cahoon was second in the 400 and third in the 800, Haley Melton was third in the 60 hurdles and second in triple jump, Catherine Asbury was third in the high jump and Haven White was third in pole vault.

Wes Ellison finished third in the 1,600, Manny Cazeau was third in the 60 hurdles and second in the 400 hurdles, Will Owens finished third in the high jump, Igbinoghene was second in long jump and Skyler Carrillo was third in shot put.

BOWLING

The Hewitt-Trussville boys bowling team won the Rebel Roll in Vestavia Hills last Tuesday. Brodie Payne was fourth overall, earning all-tournament honors.

In bracket play, the Huskies beat Calera, Vestavia Hills, Stanhope Elmore and Hoover to win the tournament.
