HS sports recap: Huskies start 1-0 in area

Here's a look back at the last week in Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school sports.


BASKETBALL

The Clay-Chalkville and Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams returned to action last Wednesday, playing games rescheduled from Tuesday due to severe weather.

Hewitt-Trussville’s boys hosted and defeated Fairview 59-39. Reid Stodghill led the Huskies with 17 points, while Ray Rolley added 13 points.

Clay-Chalkville hosted Huffman, with the Cougars falling in a pair of tough games. Huffman’s girls outlasted the Lady Cougars 48-45 in triple overtime, as Huffman banked in a 3-pointer to win the game. Kameron Sanders led all scorers with 18 points to lead Clay, while Cheyenne Pearson added 9 points. For Huffman, Jamiria Jones scored 12 points, Tamiria Jones scored 11 points and Destinee Nelson added 10 points.

Huffman’s boys beat Clay 54-46. Devon McKinnon led the Cougars with 13 points. Kevin Kirk Jr. had 11 points, while Da’Von Cheatham and Tiawan Hardy Jr. scored 7 points apiece.

Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley were back on the court Friday evening, playing in area action. Hewitt-Trussville hosted Chelsea, while Pinson Valley hosted Clay-Chalkville.

The Lady Huskies took down Chelsea 58-36. Jordan Hunter filled up the stat sheet for Hewitt, going for 22 points, 7 assists, 5 blocks and 6 rebounds in a great game. Audre Benson knocked down 18 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. She also added 4 rebounds and a pair of steals. The boys team beat Chelsea 59-31. Rolley had a standout game, going for 19 points to lead the way. Stodghill scored 13 points and Legion Gaston finished with 9.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls got past Pinson 57-40. Pearson scored 16 points to lead her team, while Sanders added 12 points in the win. Pinson’s boys earned a 72-46 win over the visiting Cougars. Austin Coner was the leader for the Indians on the night, as he went for 26 points, 7 steals and 5 rebounds. He connected on 6-of-8 3-point shots. Amarie Bowens went for 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Terry Coner added 11 points and 3 steals, while Caleb White notched 10 points and 3 steals. For Clay, Hardy scored 11 points, while Kirk posted 7 and Colin Owens added 6 points.

Pinson Valley’s boys earned a win over Haleyville on Saturday evening. White and Terry Coner eclipsed 20 points for the Indians. White led the way with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Terry Coner had 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Raymon McCants finished with 14 points and 3 rebounds, while Austin Coner added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.


WRESTLING

The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team rallied to secure a 31-30 win over Spain Park last Monday. The Huskies trailed 24-3 at one point in the match, but came back to win. Deuce Alston was the only win for the Huskies for quite some time, but Gavin Bittle, Clark Box, Bradley Hastings, Alec Nelson and Ian Hodgin gave the Huskies the lead. Jack Besse claimed a win by forfeit to seal the victory.

On Thursday, Hewitt-Trussville fell to Vestavia Hills 41-25. Over the weekend, the Huskies won two of three matches in the Class 7A, Region 3 duals. The Huskies beat Oak Mountain 66-12 and knocked off Tuscaloosa County 49-24. Their only loss was to Thompson by a score of 49-24.


INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed at the Ice Breaker Invitational last Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Michael Igbinoghene won the long jump event, reaching 22 feet, 9.75 inches.

Brianna Beckham finished third in the 60-meter dash, Madisyn Hawkins posted a third-place finish in the shot put, and the girls 4x400-meter relay team was third as well.

Daniel James was third in the pole vault competition, with the 4x200 and 4x400 boys relay teams also finishing third. DJ Carter finished second in the shot put.
