HS Hoops Update: Hunter picks up 300th career win

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams began last week on Tuesday with a trip to Gardendale. The Huskies swept the varsity games, with the girls cruising to a 58-27 win. Amiya Payne led the way with 20 points, five rebounds, six steals and four blocks. Morgan Kirk scored 18 points to go along with three rebounds and three steals. Leah Harrison narrowly missed a double-double, as she finished with nine points, nine boards and five steals.

The boys team knocked off the Rockets 52-48, behind 13 points from Jaxon Hunter and 10 from Brandon Copeland.

On Friday, the Huskies swept Oak Mountain as well. Girls head coach Tonya Hunter picked up her 300th career win in a 66-46 win over the Eagles. Harrison led the way with 20 points, followed by 14 from Kirk and 12 from D’Yona Jones. Oak Mountain’s Hannah Edwards led all scorers with 26 points. The boys picked up a big 68-62 win over a solid Eagles team. The Huskies had four scorers in double figures, with Copeland (14), Colin Glover (13), Hunter (12) and Cameron Glover (10) all having solid nights.

The boys now have a 3-1 record, while the girls are 5-4 on the year. This week, the Huskies host Pleasant Grove on Monday and travel to Huntsville on Thursday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams began last week on Tuesday with a trip to Gadsden City. The Lady Cougars fell, 53-39, while the boys team lost 48-39. The boys were led by Daniel Beachem, who scored 18 points.

The Cougars traveled to Chelsea on Thursday and the girls picked up a much-needed 49-28 win over the Hornets, as Monika Johnson led the way with 21 points. The boys dropped a tight one, 54-53. Dayon Bryant led all scorers with 23 points in the game. Donavan Shangase added 12 points and Beachem chipped in 11.

Clay-Chalkville was set to play Shades Valley on Friday, but the games were cancelled due to the Cougars football team playing in the Class 6A semifinals.

The boys team is now 1-4 on the year, with the girls holding a 2-5 record. This week, the Cougars travel to Spain Park on Tuesday and host Gardendale on Thursday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley basketball teams got last week started on Monday, as the Indians split with Center Point. The boys knocked off the Eagles 75-41, as Kam Woods scored 22 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Marques McConico posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Vic Smith achieved the same feat, with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Lady Indians lost to Center Point 39-35. Makaila Clayton scored 12 points and Courtney Whatley joined her in double figures with 11 points. The girls narrowly fell to Huffman, 49-48, on Tuesday. Whatley scored 18 points to lead the way and Kaitlyn Ambrose added 12.

The Indians swept Parker on Wednesday, with the girls winning 41-27 in their third game in as many days. Ambrose (12) and Whatley (11) each scored in double figures for the Lady Indians. The boys picked up a wild 73-69 win over the Thundering Herd. In the game, McConico had 17 points and five rebounds, while Woods registered 15 points, four rebounds and three steals. Smith had 15 points and nine boards.

The boys team has a 3-2 record on the year, while the girls are 3-7. This week, the Lady Indians are at Huffman on Thursday. The boys team plays in a tournament at Wossman High School in Louisiana during the week and plays Westlake (Georgia) on Saturday in the Memphis/Atlanta/Birmingham Challenge.
