HS hoops update heading into Christmas break

HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE

The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams each continued their impressive starts to the season last week.

The boys notched a pair of Class 7A, Area 7 wins and improved their record to 8-2 overall. On Monday, they survived Gadsden City in overtime, 68-64. Three Huskies reached double figures in the game, as Damon Harper scored 15 points, Bryant Howell added 14 and Patrick Bishop scored 10.

On Friday, they took care of business again, knocking off Grissom, 65-46. Harper scored 19 points, followed by 12 from Malachi Moore and 10 from Jaxon Hunter.

This week, the boys host Pinson Valley on Monday and travel to Biloxi, Mississippi, for a pair of games over the weekend.

The Lady Huskies also notched two area wins, but fell to a tough Madison Academy team to round out the week. On Monday, the Lady Huskies dominated Gadsden City, 65-16.

The result was the same on Friday, as Hewitt-Trussville dispatched Grissom, 59-33. Erica Jones led the way with 17 points, and freshman Amiya Payne chipped in 14 points.

The Lady Huskies hosted Madison Academy on Saturday and lost, 60-57. They are now 11-2 on the year.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE

The Clay-Chalkville High School basketball teams had a run of mixed results last week.

The boys team saw its record drop to 5-6 after dropping two of three, including a pair of Class 6A, Area 12 games. On Monday, the Cougars fell to Center Point, 44-43. They were led by Jaylin Mack’s 14 points in the tough loss.

But the Cougars rebounded on Tuesday, knocking off Chelsea, 52-44, after the Hornets beat them 13 days earlier. Brandon Harper had a big night, with 20 points and eight rebounds, and Mack added nine.

On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville dropped a 64-55 decision to area foe Pinson Valley. Nick Howard led the Cougars with 18 points, with Otis Black adding 14.

This week, the Cougars travel to Etowah on Monday and compete in Oak Mountain’s Zaxby’s Invitational Wednesday through Friday. The Cougars will begin play in the tournament against Pleasant Grove on Wednesday.

The Lady Cougars improved to 10-2 with a pair of wins sandwiched around a loss.

On Monday, they fell to area foe Center Point, 50-33, before rallying for a 54-28 win over Chelsea on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville defeated area opponent and rival Pinson Valley, 44-37.

This week, the Lady Cougars head to McAdory on Monday to face a team they knocked off last month.

PINSON VALLEY

The Pinson Valley High School basketball teams were in action last week, as the boys improved to 11-3 with three wins and the girls team picked up an area win.

The boys had no trouble with area foe Gardendale on Tuesday, as the Indians coasted to an 85-41 victory. Colby Jones led the charge with 24 points and six rebounds. Camron Scott hit three 3-pointers as he scored 14 points. Geordon Pollard added nine points.

On Thursday, the Indians defeated another area opponent, taking down Clay-Chalkville, 64-55. Jones had 12 points, 11 boards and three blocks. Orion Morris also registered a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Kewaski Jackson scored 13 and added eight assists, five steals and four rebounds. Scott scored 11 points.

The Indians traveled to Mississippi on Saturday and beat Forest Hill, 90-48. Jones had 24 points and eight rebounds, while Morris added 10 points. Pollard had 19 points and nine boards, while GaQuincy McKinstry scored 16.
