HS hoops update: Hewitt, Clay, Pinson teams showing progress

The local high school basketball teams were in action last week, despite wintry weather forcing Friday’s games to be rescheduled.

HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE

The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams played once last week, as they hosted Vestavia Hills on Tuesday.

The Lady Huskies (9-1) dominated Vestavia, winning 64-25. London Coleman led the way with 16 points, with Morgan Kirk adding 13 points, Leah Harrison scoring 11 and Erica Jones chipping in 10.

The boys (6-2) rallied from a 17-point deficit after three quarters, but fell to Vestavia, 69-67. Bryant Howell led the Huskies with 17 points, Cameron Glover added 15 and Malachi Moore scored 13.

Hewitt-Trussville opens up area play this week, with a pair of home contests against Gadsden City and Grissom. The Gadsden City game on Monday is the rescheduled game from Friday.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE

The Clay-Chalkville High School basketball teams also played just once last week, as they hosted Mountain Brook on Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars fell to Mountain Brook, 62-47, and now sit at 8-3 on the season. Brandon Harper led the boys team (4-4) with 11 points in the Cougars’ 56-51 loss to Mountain Brook.

This week, Clay-Chalkville hosts three games, against Center Point on Monday, Chelsea on Tuesday and Pinson Valley on Thursday.

PINSON VALLEY

The Pinson Valley High School basketball teams were busy last week.

The boys team played three games, starting with a 66-52 win over Center Point on Tuesday. Geordon Pollard had a big night with 22 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Colby Jones added 21 points and seven rebounds.

Jones and Pollard played big roles again on Wednesday, as the Indians defeated Fairfield, 66-63. Jones had 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Pollard added 18 points and six boards.

The Indians suffered a tough 70-69 loss against Ridgeway (Tennessee) on Saturday. They are now 8-3 on the year.

The girls team is now 4-6 after splitting a pair of games last week. The Lady Indians lost to Center Point, 48-20, before rebounding to beat Fairfield, 52-42.

This week, Pinson Valley hosts Gardendale on Tuesday and travels to Clay-Chalkville on Thursday in area contests. On Saturday, Pinson Valley travels to Columbus, Mississippi.
