HS Hoops Update: Lady Huskies roll

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams began last week with a home date against Pleasant Grove on Monday. The Lady Huskies put together a 59-48 victory, led by a big night from Amiya Payne, who posted 19 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Leah Harrison had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. D’Yona Jones registered eight points and 13 boards.

The boys team fell in overtime, dropping a 70-61 decision to the Spartans. After a tight battle, the Huskies took a five-point lead with two minutes to play in regulation but were unable to hang on. Cameron Glover led the Huskies with 25 points on the night, and Jaxon Hunter added 10.

Hewitt-Trussville was back in action on Thursday against Huntsville, as the Huskies picked up a sweep. The Lady Huskies rolled to a 65-39 win behind 22 points from Payne. Morgan Kirk added 15 points. The boys pulled out a 63-60 win over Huntsville, led by first-year head coach Christian Schweers. Glover led the way for the Huskies as he put up 22 points. Brandan Copeland added 17 points, and Hunter scored 11.

This week, the Huskies host Phillips on Monday and are at Pinson Valley on Friday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams picked up a split last Tuesday at Spain Park. The boys team earned a 51-41 victory over the Jags, led by Daniel Beachem’s 15 points. Dayon Bryant and Jaylin Mack each added 14. The Lady Cougars were led by Erica Lockhart, who scored 16 points in a 43-21 defeat.

On Friday, the Cougars paid a visit to Gardendale and came away with a split. The Lady Cougars rolled to a 53-18 win, but the boys fell 56-50 in a tight contest. Bryant led the Cougars with 17 points.

This week, the Cougars are at Pell City on Tuesday and host Chelsea on Thursday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley girls basketball team played its lone game of the week last Monday, as the Lady Indians fell to Huffman 42-22. The Lady Indians are now 3-8 overall on the season.

The boys team traveled to Monroe, Louisiana, to take part in the Belton/Williams Classic, and split a pair of games on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, the Indians fell to Rayville 86-62. Kam Woods posted 28 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists to lead the team. Jo Jo James had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Marques McConico had eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Indians rebounded for a 104-95 win over Ruston on Thursday, as Woods poured in half of his team’s points (52). Woods also piled up eight boards, five assists and five steals. Horace Wilson had a strong game with 16 points and six rebounds, while McConico posted 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. James had 11 points, seven boards and three steals.

The Pinson Valley boys closed the week with a 71-61 loss to Westlake (Ga.). Woods tallied 22 points, Geordon Pollard had 13 points and eight rebounds, GaQuincy McKinstry contributed 11 points, and McConico chipped in eight points and three rebounds. 

This week, the Indians have a trifecta of home games, as they host Parker on Monday, Fairfield on Tuesday and Hewitt-Trussville on Friday.
