HS Hoops Update: Lady Huskies finish runners-up

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team hosted the Husky Thanksgiving Tournament powered by Trussville Gas and Water early last week. The Lady Huskies won a pair of games on Monday, as they knocked off Covington (Tennessee) 59-37 to get things started. Amiya Payne had 16 points and eight rebounds in the contest. Leah Harrison added 12 points and seven boards and Morgan Kirk had 10 points and four assists.

In the semifinals later that day, they dominated Oak Mountain 72-30. Payne was one of five double-figure scorers, as she led the way with 17 points and five rebounds. Kirk had 16 points and seven assists, while D’Yona Jones posted 12 points and nine boards. April Hooks added 11 points and Harrison had 10.

Spain Park beat Hewitt-Trussville in the final, 52-42. Kirk led all scorers with 18 points, but Spain Park had three reach double figures in the game. Payne added 10 points as well.

The Lady Huskies traveled to Tennessee over the weekend to play in Houston High School’s Lady Mustang Thanksgiving Classic. On Friday, Hewitt-Trussville fell to Houston 59-51, as Payne led the way with 21 points and five rebounds. Arlington knocked off Hewitt 65-35 on Saturday.

This week, the Hewitt-Trussville boys are back in action as well. Both teams head to Gardendale on Wednesday and host Oak Mountain on Friday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams were in tournament action last week. The boys team played in Vestavia’s Sneaky Pete’s Rebel Classic to begin its season. On Monday, the Cougars fell to Vestavia Hills 61-25, but rebounded on Tuesday with a 42-38 win over Prattville. Daniel Beachem led the Cougars with 16 points. The Cougars lost to Hartselle 58-37 on Wednesday, with Dayon Bryant leading the team with 12 points. Beachem added 10 points.

The Lady Cougars played in Mountain Brook’s Spartan Turkey Jam tournament. On Saturday, Nov. 17, they fell 60-31 to Vestavia Hills. Clay-Chalkville picked up its first win of the season on Monday with a 45-22 victory over Jackson-Olin. Erica Lockhart scored 22 points to lead the way. The Lady Cougars lost to Phillips in double overtime on Tuesday and are now 1-4 on the season.

This week, Clay-Chalkville is at Gadsden City on Tuesday, hosts Chelsea on Thursday and heads to Shades Valley on Friday.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley basketball teams were also in action last week in tournament play. The girls team finished up play in Hewitt-Trussville’s tournament. Following a 55-21 loss to Wenonah on Saturday, Nov. 17, to open the tournament, the Lady Indians fell to Sidney Lanier 62-54 on Monday. On Tuesday, Pinson Valley fell to 2-5 on the season with a 50-46 loss to Woodlawn.

The boys team began play in the N2Hoops Invitational at Bob Jones on Monday, as the Indians knocked off Madison Academy 57-31. Kam Woods led the charge with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals on the night. JoJo James filled up the stat sheet as well, with 10 points, six boards and three steals. Horace Wilson registered 14 rebounds and three steals and nine Pinson Valley players scored in the game.

On Tuesday, the Indians fell to Bob Jones, 77-66. Woods had 30 points, three assists and three steals, while Marques McConico added 13 points. Wilson added 10 boards.

This week, Pinson Valley hosts Center Point on Monday, the girls host Huffman on Tuesday and both teams head to Parker on Wednesday.
