HS hoops update: Teams conclude regular season

HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE

The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams got off to a rocky start in the final week of the regular season as they traveled to Shades Valley on Monday, Jan. 29. The Lady Huskies got 23 points from London Coleman, but fell 65-56. Leah Harrison also scored 17 points.

The boys team was put into a 10-0 hole right off the bat and never recovered, losing 77-56. T.J. Alexander and Bryant Howell each scored 10 points in the loss.

The Huskies rallied on the night of Tuesday, Jan. 30 in a trip to Minor. They battled the Tigers for two extra periods, but found a way to win, 76-74. Malachi Moore led the way with 18 points, followed by 16 points from Damon Harper. Howell scored 14 and Alexander chipped in 10 for the second straight night.

Hewitt-Trussville concluded the regular season on Friday, Feb. 2 with a trip to Center Point. The Lady Huskies (23-3) pulled out a tight 56-54 win, as a pair of Coleman free throws sealed the victory in the closing moments. The boys (15-8) fell, 64-56.

Both teams will host the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament this week. The Lady Huskies will take on Gadsden City at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, while the boys play Gadsden City on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The championship games are set for 5:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE

The Clay-Chalkville High School basketball teams began the final week of the regular season with a trip to Shades Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The Lady Cougars struggled in a 50-21 loss to a solid Mounties team. The boys team fell, 56-55, on a 3-pointer with four seconds to play in the contest. Nick Howard led the Cougars with 17 points, and Jovan Gale scored 10 points.

The Cougars hosted Vestavia Hills on Friday night to cap off the regular season. The Lady Cougars prevailed, 46-40, as Erica Lockhart and Monika Johnson each scored 14 points to lead the way. The boys team fell, 46-36.

The Lady Cougars completed the regular season with a 17-8 record, and will take on Pinson Valley on Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Center Point in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament. The title game is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.

The boys team is 12-13 and takes on Center Point at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Pinson Valley. The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8.

PINSON VALLEY

The Pinson Valley High School basketball teams kicked off the final week of regular season action at home against Midfield on Monday, Jan. 29. The Lady Indians had a rough go of it, losing 52-31.

The boys game was a frenetic, back-and-forth contest. Midfield came from behind the defeat the Indians, 96-92. Kameron Woods’ strong performance and 27 points led the Patriots to the win. Geordon Pollard led Pinson Valley with 27 points. Orion Morris scored 24 and Colby Jones added 19.

The boys team rebounded to dominate Thompson, 85-54, on Thursday, Feb. 1. In the win, Morris scored 20 points and picked up five steals. LiAllen Dailey notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Colby Jones scored 15 points and hauled in six boards, and Jerell Willie scored 13 points.

The Indians wrapped up their regular seasons on Friday, Feb. 2 at Fairfield. The girls team fell flat in a 52-30 loss to finish with a 9-18 record. The boys team also lost, but in a close game, 54-52. They finished with a 19-10 record.

This week, Pinson Valley’s teams will compete in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament. The girls play Clay-Chalkville on Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Center Point, with the championship game set for Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.

The boys team went a perfect 6-0 in area play and earned the right to host the area tournament. The Indians will play Gardendale on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m., with the championship game set for Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
