HS hoops update: Teams wrap up area play

HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE

The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams began their week by visiting crosstown foe Pinson Valley. The Lady Huskies notched a big win, beating the Indians, 70-39, behind 21 points from freshman Amiya Payne.

In a frenetic game, the Pinson Valley boys took down the Huskies, 99-83.

On Friday, the Lady Huskies finished up a perfect 6-0 area slate with a 61-33 win over Huntsville. They also improved to 22-2 on the year and set a school record for most wins in a season.

The boys team pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback and knocked off Huntsville, 57-54. Damon Harper led the way with 20 points, as the Huskies improved to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in the area. They tied for first place with Grissom and a coin flip on Monday was set to determine the area tournament host.

This week, the Huskies wrap up the regular season. Both teams are at Shades Valley on Monday night, the boys travel to Minor on Tuesday, and both teams head to Center Point on Friday.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE

The Clay-Chalkville High School basketball teams wrapped up Class 6A, Area 12 play on Tuesday night, as the boys and girls teams picked up the sweep over Gardendale.

The Lady Cougars picked up a 42-35 win, and for the boys, Nick Howard broke out with a 25-point performance, as the Cougars picked up a 62-54 win. Jovan Gale added 11 points.

Both teams finished area play with a 3-3 mark. Center Point will host the girls area tournament, while Pinson Valley will host the one on the boys side.

This week, the Cougars round out the regular season at Shades Valley on Wednesday and at home against Vestavia Hills on Friday.

PINSON VALLEY

The Pinson Valley High School basketball teams hosted crosstown foe Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday night and came away with a split.

The Lady Indians fell to the Lady Huskies, 70-39. The boys team earned the win, though, knocking off Hewitt-Trussville, 99-83. In the win, Colby Jones poured in 31 points and five rebounds. Geordon Pollard had 19 points and six boards, while Orion Morris had a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Kewaski Jackson had 10 points and seven assists, and LiAllen Dailey also notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.

Pinson Valley wrapped up area play with a trip to Gardendale on Thursday. The Lady Indians finished area play with a 3-3 after a 41-27 win on the night. Janiaya Mintze led the way with 14 points and Courtney Whatley contributed 13 points. The boys cruised to a 76-42 victory to cap off a perfect 6-0 run in area action, behind 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Jones. Morris had 14 points, and Pollard finished with 10 points and six boards.

This week, the Indians finish up the regular season with games at home against Midfield on Monday and Thompson on Thursday, before a road trip to Fairfield on Friday.
