HS Hoops Update: Indians finish unbeaten in area

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams wrapped up Class 7A, Area 6 play last week, beginning with a home date against Spain Park on Tuesday night. The Jags swept the Huskies, beginning with Spain Park’s 75-65 win in the girls game. Spain Park’s Sarah Ashlee Barker led all scorers with 27 points. Erica Jones led Hewitt with 16 points, followed by 14 from Amiya Payne and 12 points from Morgan Kirk. The Huskies boys fell 67-65 in a close contest.

Hewitt-Trussville finished up area action on Friday when the Huskies hosted Mountain Brook. The Lady Huskies dominated in a 67-37 victory. Payne went for 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Kirk added 12 points, five rebounds and five steals. Jones went for 11 points and five rebounds. The Hewitt boys fell to the Spartans 63-39.

The Huskies traveled to Madison Academy on Saturday and came away with a split. The Lady Huskies fell 52-45 to one of the top Class 5A teams, while the boys picked up a 59-39 win.

Hewitt’s girls are 15-9 overall and went 4-2 in area play, while the boys are 7-14 and 0-6. Weather permitting, the Huskies are set to complete regular season play this week with home games against Pinson Valley, Phillips and Center Point.


Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville boys basketball team began last week on the right side of a result in the Augusta’s Sports Grill Shoot Out at Wallace State, which was played on Monday. The Cougars knocked off Southside-Gadsden 57-45 behind 30 points from Dayon Bryant. Daniel Beachem also scored 10 for the Cougars.

On Tuesday, the Cougars concluded Class 6A, Area 12 play by hosting crosstown foe Pinson Valley. The Cougars honored seniors on the girls and boys teams that evening. In the girls game, the Lady Cougars pulled away in the second quarter and cruised to a 51-26 win. Lakerrya Moulton led Clay-Chalkville with 12 points, while seniors Monika Johnson and Erica Lockhart each scored 11 points.

The boys game yielded the opposite outcome, with Pinson Valley running out to a 74-56 win. Leading all scorers was Bryant, who had 24 in the contest.

Clay-Chalkville traveled to Center Point on Friday night and came away with a split. The Lady Cougars ran away with a 56-39 victory, as Aukeivah Tellis and Johnson each scored 14 points. The Center Point boys knocked off the Cougars 59-31.

Clay-Chalkville’s girls finished 3-1 in area play and won a coin toss with Pell City to earn the right to host the area tournament. They are also 14-9 overall and have won seven straight. The boys went 2-2 in area play and are now 12-12 overall. The Cougars finish regular season play this week at home against Shades Valley and at Vestavia Hills.


Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley boys basketball team began last week on Monday, playing in the nightcap of the MLK Classic at Fairfield High School. The Indians fell to Wenonah 66-57, despite 35 points from Kam Woods, who also added four rebounds and three steals. GaQuincy McKinstry battled through an ankle injury to post eight points, four rebounds and four assists. Geordon Pollard had eight rebounds and four blocks, and Horace Wilson chipped in seven boards and two steals.

On Tuesday, the Indians went to Clay-Chalkville for a Class 6A, Area 12 matchup. In the girls game, Clay-Chalkville pulled away for a 51-26 win. Kaitlyn Ambrose led Pinson with eight points in the game. In the boys game, the Indians pulled away for a 74-56 victory. Clay’s Dayon Bryant led all scorers with 24 points, but Pollard led the way for Pinson with 16 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Woods had 14 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. Wilson scored 12 points to go along with six boards and three steals. Jo Jo James knocked down three 3-pointers to score nine points while also grabbing five rebounds.

The Indians finished up area play on Thursday against Pell City. The girls ended up with an 0-4 mark in the area after a close 45-38 loss. The boys completed the area sweep, as their 67-30 win lifted them to 4-0 and gave them the right to host the area tournament. In the boys game, Vic Smith led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals. Mason Rudolph registered 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Tim Moneyham notched a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks. CJ Finch nearly achieved the same and finished with 11 points and nine boards.

The boys team is now 18-6 overall and the girls are 5-18. This week, the Indians finish up regular season play. Both teams visit Hewitt-Trussville and Mountain Brook, and the boys also host Midfield.
