HS hoops update: Weather alters schedules

HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE

The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams played an area game on Friday following the girls’ trip to Huntsville on Monday.

On Monday, the Lady Huskies avenged an earlier loss to Madison Academy, with a 55-42 victory in Huntsville. Erica Jones led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Leah Harrison nearly notched a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. London Coleman impressed as well, with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

On Friday, the Lady Huskies improved to 20-2 on the year and 5-0 in Class 7A, Area 7 play with a 50-40 win at Grissom. The boys team fell to Grissom, 68-60, to drop to 13-5 and 2-2 in area.

This week, the Huskies are at Pinson Valley on Tuesday and host Huntsville on Friday.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE

The Clay-Chalkville boys basketball team began the week with a 61-46 loss to Sparkman at Wallace State, as Jaden Johnson led the team with 13 points.

On Friday, the Cougars were swept by Pinson Valley in a Class 6A, Area 12 date. The Lady Cougars fell to Pinson Valley, 48-43, to drop to 15-7 overall and 2-3 in area play. The boys team fell, 88-57, and is now 11-11 overall and 2-3 in area.

This week, the Cougars host Gardendale on Tuesday in an area matchup and host Sylacauga on Saturday.

PINSON VALLEY

The Pinson Valley High School basketball teams had a busy end of last week after winter weather postponed games set for early in the week.

On Thursday, the girls team fell to Center Point, 51-35, while the boys won 64-50. On Friday, the Lady Indians notched a 48-43 win over Clay-Chalkville, as Courtney Whatley scored 14 points and Janiaya Mintze added 10, to improve to 8-15 overall and 2-2 in Class 6A, Area 12 play.

The boys team coasted to an 88-57 win over Clay-Chalkville on Friday. On Saturday, the Indians traveled to Georgia and notched an impressive 68-65 win over St. Pius X. Colby Jones led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Orion Morris notched 22 points and six rebounds, while GaQuincy McKinstry filled the stat sheet with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. The Indians are now 16-8 overall and 5-0 in area play.

This week, Pinson Valley hosts Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday and travels to Gardendale on Thursday.
