HS Hoops Update: Lady Cougars win 5th straight

Hewitt-Trussville

The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams continued area play last week, starting with a set of games at Mountain Brook on Tuesday night.

The Lady Huskies pulled out a 62-57 win after a fourth-quarter rally put them on top for good. Amiya Payne led all scorers with 31 points in the contest, with Leah Harrison (15 points) and Morgan Kirk (11) also joining in double figures. Emily Henderson led Mountain Brook with 17 points. The boys team fell to Mountain Brook 76-57.

The Lady Huskies played much better on Friday, as they traveled to Vestavia Hills and came away with a 52-34 win. Payne had 19 points and was joined in double figures by Kirk, who had 12 points. The boys team had a fourth-quarter rally come up short in a 70-61 loss. Cameron Glover (17 points), Mike Edwards (14) and Jaxon Hunter (12) all had double digit points for the Huskies.

The girls team now has a 14-7 overall record and is 3-1 in Class 7A, Area 6, while the boys are 6-12 and 0-4. The Huskies conclude area play this week by hosting Spain Park on Tuesday and Mountain Brook on Friday before a trip to Madison Academy on Saturday.

Clay-Chalkville

The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams were back in action last week, beginning things on Tuesday night with an area sweep of Pell City. The Lady Cougars pulled out a 53-47 win over the Panthers, with Erica Lockhart scoring 21 points to lead the way. Monika Johnson added 13 points for the Lady Cougars. The boys team had a relatively easy time in its 63-30 win.

The Cougars had another successful night on Thursday, as they swept Gardendale. The Lady Cougars ran away with a 52-23 victory behind 19 points from Lockhart, while Johnson added 14. The boys held on for a 48-44 victory as well, with Dayon Bryant going for 18 points.

The girls team is now 12-9 overall and the boys are 11-10, with both squads 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 12 play. This week, the Cougars host Pinson Valley on Tuesday in an area contest and head to Center Point on Friday. On Monday, the boys play at Wallace State Community College against Southside-Gadsden.

Pinson Valley

The Pinson Valley girls basketball team began play last week on Wednesday afternoon, as the Lady Indians picked up a 43-39 over Hueytown. In the contest, Ashly Robinson led Pinson with 13 points, and Kaitlyn Ambrose joined her in double figures with 12 points.

Both Indians basketball teams traveled to Center Point on Thursday night. The Lady Indians fell to the Eagles 41-23. The boys fared better, picking up an 80-59 win. Kam Woods led the way, dropping 36 points, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, to go along with five assists. GaQuincy McKinstry scored 20 points and had four assists and five steals. Marques McConico tallied nine points and seven rebounds, and Geordon Pollard had nine points and three blocks.

On Saturday, the boys traveled to Florida to face Tate and picked up a 76-64 win. McKinstry and Woods nearly combined for 60 points, with McKinstry going for 31 points, four steals and three assists, while Woods had 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals on the night. Horace Wilson had a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with three points and five steals. Pollard filled up the stat sheet, tallying eight points, eight boards, three blocks, two steals and two assists.

The boys team is the top-ranked squad in Class 6A and holds a 16-5 overall record and 2-0 mark in Area 12. The girls are 5-16 and 0-2. This week, the boys play Wenonah as part of the MLK Classic at Fairfield on Monday. Both teams head to Clay-Chalkville on Tuesday and host Pell City on Thursday.
