HS hoops update: Huskies look strong, Cougars even area record, Indians fall

HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE

The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams continued their strong play last week.

The Lady Huskies (18-2) increased their winning streak to seven games with a pair of wins during the week. On Friday, they beat Gadsden City, 56-39, to improve to 4-0 in Class 7A, Area 7 play. Erica Jones led the team with 19 points.

On Saturday, they played Huffman in the Viking Classic and came away with a 68-46 win. Leah Harrison led the charge with 23 points, with Amiya Payne adding 18 points.

The boys team notched an 86-69 victory over Minor on Tuesday, but took its first loss in area play on Friday, as the Huskies fell to Gadsden City, 60-42. Despite the setback, the Huskies are still 13-4 overall and 3-1 in area play.

This week, the Lady Huskies play Madison Academy in Huntsville on Monday. Both teams pick up area play again on Friday, as they travel to Grissom.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE

The Clay-Chalkville High School basketball teams continued Class 6A, Area 12 play last week.

The boys team picked up a pair of critical wins to even its area record at 2-2. On Tuesday, the Cougars traveled to Center Point and came away with a 47-40 win. Brandon Harper led the way with 19 points and Nick Howard chipped in 10.

Friday, Clay-Chalkville picked up another road win, beating Gardendale, 53-40. Jovan Gale had a big night, as he scored 17 points. Howard added 13. The Cougars now sit with an 11-9 record this season.

The Lady Cougars split their two area games last week. On Tuesday, they fell to Center Point, 49-40. On Friday, they easily dispatched Gardendale, 39-18, and are now 15-6 (2-2 area) on the year.

This week, the boys team plays Sparkman at Wallace State on Monday. Both teams pick up area play again on Friday at Pinson Valley.

PINSON VALLEY

The Pinson Valley High School basketball teams did not fare well last week.

The boys team played in one game, a Wednesday night affair at Midfield. Turnovers doomed the Indians in the end, as they fell, 81-72. Orion Morris led the way with 21 points. GaQuincy McKinstry dropped in 14, Colby Jones added 13, and Geordon Pollard scored 11.

The girls team lost to Midfield, 64-50, on the same night, and fell to Carver-Birmingham, 60-33, in Huffman’s Viking Classic on Saturday.

This week, Pinson Valley hosts Center Point on Tuesday and Clay-Chalkville on Friday.
