MADISON — In a game delayed nearly three hours due to lighting problems in Madison City Schools Stadium, eighth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville High School lit up Bob Jones 42-20 on Friday night in the first round of the Class 7A state playoffs.

Shortly before 9 p.m. — almost two hours after the original kickoff time — officials announced the contest would be moved 11 miles down the road to Milton Frank Stadium. The late change wouldn’t slow the visitors, who are bound for the quarterfinals for the fifth time in six years.

Senior linebacker Bam White started the scoring with a pick-6 in the opening minute, Omari Kelly reeled in two touchdown receptions and the visiting Huskies (9-2) handled their late kickoff in Huntsville brilliantly.

Up next for Hewitt-Trussville will be a second-round trip to top-ranked Hoover, which beat Sparkman 56-14 on Friday. The Huskies fell by a count of 34-10 in their regular-season trip to Hoover on Oct. 1.

Senior running back James Hammonds led Hewitt’s ground game with 147 yards and two scores in the win. His touchdowns, both of which came in the second half, covered 82 and 17 yards.

Cade Carruth, in his second game back from injury, went 9-for-11 through the air for 157 yards and a touchdown to Kelly, who finished with a game-high 128 yards on just four grabs. His second TD reception, a 48-yarder midway through the second frame, came from Peyton Floyd.

Floyd also provided a spark with his legs, finishing with 69 yards and a score on six attempts.

Despite a three-touchdown effort from quarterback Rayshawn Hardy, Bob Jones saw its season come to an end at 5-6.

Both of Hardy’s touchdown runs came from 2 yards out. His touchdown pass covered 33 yards to Rob Morgan in the third quarter.
