Preparation for the ACT is a constant theme throughout a student’s sophomore to senior years of high school. It can be stressful to navigate through multiple demands of time management and this unfamiliar, high-stakes test.

Though studies have shown that high school students’ grades are a bigger factor in college success than standardized test scores, college entrance exams like the ACT continue to play a crucial role in student admissions and scholarships. This makes test score improvement a big consideration for parents and students.

Hewitt-Trussville High School decided to create a course around prepping students for the half-day test. Now entering its fourth testing season, the HTHS course consists of eight classes focusing on English, math, reading/writing and science.

“So many kids go across town to take these ACT prep classes,” said Vanessa Romano, the HTHS ACT prep program administrator. “I don't feel like the surrounding communities realize that we offer this program. We want to offer this to students in our neighboring communities.” Romano emphasized that the program is offered to students outside of Trussville City Schools.

When taking an ACT prep course, students can learn strategy, not just content. “Through test prep with a certified teacher in their area [English, history, math and science], students are at an advantage,” Romano said. “Students can also learn strategies to manage their time and performance.” Skills such as pacing and process of elimination are part of the course, Romano said.

Students who have already taken the ACT are encouraged to bring in their ACT score analysis sheet to receive more precise instruction.

“Our program is different than the others offered in our area,” Romano said. “If you sign up for the ACT prep class at any time, you can come to any other of the sessions for free. You don’t pay the fee each time.”

The nonrefundable course fee of $300 includes an ACT prep book and additional resources.

Most of all, test prep can improve scores.

According to a National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) study, one-third of college admission counselors said a small increase in standardized test scores could make a difference in an admission decision.

Since the HTHS ACT prep classes’ conception, students have seen improvements in their overall ACT scores. “We have seen students improve their ACT scores by an average of 3 to 4 point increase,” said Romano.

Romano said students will see results, but they will have to work for it.

“Test prep works for best for students who are committed to improving and willing to put in the work,” Romano said.

Those interested in signing up for the next HTHS ACT prep classes can register at act.org. HTHS is offering two more class sessions for the April 14 and June 9 ACT testing dates.

Classes will be held at HTHS, located at 6450 Husky Parkway, from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays (Floor B Wing) and Thursdays (Floor Main Hall) for four weeks.
