What began as an innocuous contest became quite a thrill for Trussville’s KK Hughes.

Hughes has long been a fan of Great American Cookies, and she was thrilled with the news the company was set to open a joint store in Trussville with Marble Slab Creamery. To drum up interest for the store’s opening, Great American posted a contest to its Facebook page, awarding one winner a $100 gift card.

On May 18, Great American announced the winner of the contest as Leslee Hughes, KK’s mother. But once the higher-ups at Great American learned how big of a fan KK was of the brand, they decided to do something special.

Great American invited the Hughes family to the U.S. 280 location of the store May 26. That afternoon, KK was presented with the $100 gift card, a Great American T-shirt and was named an ambassador for the company. She was also given a personalized cookie cake, paying homage to her days in the Hewitt-Trussville High School softball program.

KK is set to attend South Alabama in the fall on a softball scholarship. She helped lead the 2019 Hewitt-Trussville softball team to the Class 7A state championship and was 7-0 with a 1.00 ERA in the abbreviated 2020 campaign.

The new Marble Slab and Great American location opened in Trussville on May 29.
