The Trussville Downtown Merchants Association is revving up summer celebrations with a classic car show July 15 from 2-8 p.m. The event, which is the latest addition to the “Third Saturday Downtown” summer series, will line North Chalkville Road with classic cars and offer community members a chance to step back in time to the 1950s.

“The car shows were such a big hit that we wanted to tie a theme around that,” said DMA President Greg Carroll, mentioning some of the events that the association has planned in the past.

This year, they decided to tie the car show into a sock hop that will span downtown, featuring music, costumes and more.

“There will be a DJ playing ’50s [and] ’60s tunes with karaoke,” Carroll said, adding that there will also be dance and costume contests, as well as awards for the cars that the public can vote on. “From 2-8 p.m., we’ll be having something every hour, on the hour, tying to our event,” he said.

In addition to hosting cars, participating merchants will also get involved by having sales and dressing up. “There’s one local merchant that’s thinking about having a ’50s and ’60s band at their location,” Carroll said.

Like the DMA’s other events, the car show will feature food trucks including Eugene’s Hot Chicken and Off the Hook. A children’s area with inflatables will also be available, and guests are encouraged to bring chairs and hang out.
