The Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club continued its annual celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday by giving a Dr. Seuss book to kindergarten students at Paine Elementary. This year’s book distribution was a little different due to COVID-19 restrictions, and the books were mailed to the students with their report cards, with postage paid by the Rotarians.

“Rotary Readers” have been working hard to instill the love of reading in young readers by regular reading sessions with local students for many years. Several members of the Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club give their time every Wednesday morning by reading with the students, as well as doing educational activities with them.

Mary Jean Sanspree, an active member of the Rotary Club, came up with the idea of presenting books to the children several years ago. “The kids are always so excited to have their very own Dr. Seuss books. It is great to see the smiles on their faces as each one opens his or her book,” she said.

Rotarian Fran Aldridge now coordinates the program and said, “We are always looking for readers. The students at Paine love to have readers visit their classrooms.”

In 2018, these dedicated readers were presented with the Excellence in Service Award at the Paws for a Cause Gala by the Trussville City Schools Foundation.
